Peter Jackson to remake Dambuster film

Postby Bitterandtwisted on Thu Aug 31, 2006 4:49 pm

Rumoured to be seven hours long, featuring Andy Serkis as an army of CG Nazis.

At least it didn't go to Mel Gibson as originaly planned (amusing as it would be to have the English portrayed as evil in a dambuster movie).

Jackson said it would be "as authentic as possible and as close to the spirit of the original as possible".

Then why the hell would they need to remake it?

And what is the fascination all of a sudden for remakes? The new Wicker Man looks awful.

Good point, actually. The dog's name from the 1954 version just ain't acceptable at all these days (unless you're some KKK or National Front arsehole).

I think it'll just turn into a typical Hollywood, "let's throw money at it to make it legendary" trash. All the pilots and Barnes Wallis will magically become Californians. The original version has a real charm to it, a true classic film.

At least the guy who wrote U571 finally apologised to the families of the Royal Navy personnel who captured the Enigma machine. Took him a few years, but never mind, better late than never I suppose.

I have only this to say, and bear in mind I say it as a dual national of the UK and US.

So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

Why does Peter Jackson constantly see the need to adapt other people's material? Surely he must have some original ideas of his own?

You speak too soon. As far as I can see there is no American involvement in this production. That and the rumours is probably bollocks anyway.

Peter Jackson - New Zealander
StudioCanal - French
Christian Rivers - New Zealander

I might speak too soon, but I'd be horrified if this was ever backed by British money.

I hope they don't even dare consider re-writing the theme music to ignore Eric Coates' timeless tune.

Hollywood doesnt always let the remakes get made. Anyoen remember when Ben Affleck and J-Lo wanted to remake Casablanca? They got told in no uncertain terms by the studios "on yer bike".

Theres lots of good remakes too. I liked the colour version of Psycho, and the Fly with Jeff Goldblum is actually the remake of the Vincent Price original.

Jackson is holloywoods hot director right now, he can do what he damn well likes.

Why is Peter Jackson so hot? King Kong was complete rowlocks.

And they didn't just call the dog "Nigger" for the film; that was actually the name of Guy Gibson's dog. To call it anything else would be falsifying historical fact.

The only thing that could improve the last film would be in the effects, which are cringe-makingly bad in the original. However I have yet to see decent computer-graphic-ed water, which is surely the most important thing - why don't they wait until they can do it well before doing it? Better still, don't use any computer graphics at all, and use the money to make a dam and destroy it; that would be infinitely better.

Yes, well, you may know that, and now we who read this will know that... but there are a great many people out there who wouldn't, and would be so offended as to not see the film- in essence, denying monetary support to ideologies they disagree with. Or at least that is how they would see it, regardless of the facts.

And God forbid people might learn something from the film. That logic would completely excuse the execrable U571 on the grounds that most people didn't know who Alan Turing was, so there was no call to put him in the film.

Fact is fact. Sometimes it's uncomfortable. That's life.

And that compares how? It's simple recognition of a name compared to a relatively obscure fact...that would offend the hell out of everyone who did not know it was a fact.

They have every right to keep their money from supporting something they disagree with. And I'd like to think that most people nowadays, would strongly object to supporting something more identified with the KKK then anything else.

You're absolutely right. Everyone has the right to go through life without seeing or hearing anything which they might find remotely offensive. Also the right never to hear or learn anything outside of their experience. And, damn it, the right to sue if they ever do.

It's a name. It's historically accurate. It should be there in the context or it's revisionism. There are lots of things in history that I find offensive, and indeed many concepts I associate with less than pleasant groups, but that does not lend me the right to be cushioned from ever hearing about them.

If, on the basis of that name, someone chooses to withhold their money or support, so be it. The world can always use more thin-skinned reactionaries and there's never enough shoulder-borne chips around.
