The Democratic Party made gains of 30 seats in the House of Representatives, thereby securing the majority (incidentally making Pelosi the first female speaker of the House).

The Senate is currently tied, officially at 49 seats each. I believe there are 4 disputed seats, and the issue will not likely be resolved until recounts can be completed. December, maybe.

I'm a little concerned that on their map for that story New Hampshire appears to either be its own country or to have joined Canada. Considering the enmity and contempt most New Hampshirites have for Canada, I'm sure they'd be *thrilled*...

Can someone explain because maybe I'm being thick but how have the Democrats won the Senate? It 49 49 2, surely that a hung Senate? Or do things not work like that in the US

The "2" are a Socialist/Independent from Vermont, Bernie Sanders, who aligns with the Democratic Party and Joe Lieberman (erstwhile vice-prez candidate for Gore) who is still a party member but ran on a pro-Iraq ticket. He'll vote with the party on most issues, though.
