Hi my names poppy. Im the events officer for SVS and have organised the event. I basically wanted a theme that has never been done before!

Its gonna be super cheesy with music that you can dance to all the time. The music will not contain the final countdown or any of the usual stuff you get in the bop!

The idea was to base it on the GAY club in London.

Should be very fun!!!

Only £3 a ticket so make sure all you sinners are there!!!!

Thought I would bump this thread seeing as the event is tomorrow night.

I am the current SSC Volunteering Officer and I handily double up as SVS Convenor!

The G.A.Y (er) bop tomorrow night has three main goals-

** To promote SVS (St Andrews Voluntary Service) as too many people,in my opinion, don't have a clue who SVS are, what we do or how they can get involved. Also the bop is a nice platform for LGBT to promote themselves and their issue campiagns.

**To raise cash for SVS as we are a charity and NPO.

**To get drunk, dress up, have an excuse to be as camp as you like and have a gay old time!

If you still don't have a clue what its all about, check out our facebook group (feel free to join!)-

or have a look at (and attend!)the event -

Later ;)

I went there once. My enduring memory is men with their T-shirts off who were a bit sweaty and a man with long hair touching my arse.

Didn't go again.

This sounds exactly the same as the bop when the rugby team turned up.

This is not a joke.

I must agree. It almost makes me sick. Can't they keep this sort of thing private. Also why do they feel the need to capitalise the word gay. First of all it is a disgrace to the English language that they have re-defined it and now they must put it in capital letters to make their point.

And with full stops in between the letters so that it's no longer a word, but an acronym. Shocking!

Perverting the English language too. Dear oh dear.

Er ... what now?

Postby grousefanatic on Sat Nov 25, 2006 10:04 am

It's not quite that clear cut.

It's a themed bop night hosted by SVS that is only in association with LGBTsoc, based upon the London club party G-A-Y (capitalised and with hyphens between each letter - the only reason that it now has full stops is to prevent infringment on copyright, as the club's name is trademarked). G-A-Y, although primarily aimed at LGBT markets, is utterly undiscriminatory and anyone who enjoys good music and dancing can come along. It's not a perversion of the English language, just avoidance of copyright laws.

Fair enough, you may not like gay people. Whatever, I'm sure we'll cope. However, when M2949 talks about "they", please remember it's a bop night organised by SVS (a charitable section of the Association), not organised by LGBTsoc or any other gay organisation. I believe they wanted to go for a theme of a fun yet chilled atmosphere where anyone can have a good time.

And we didn't redefine the word, it was just something that evolved, none of this word reclamation business I keep hearing about. Yes, we may have used it to protect ourselves from queer, but the connotations of sexual freedom (in this instance to disregard social mores) have been around for quite some time.

i agree with grousefanatic. it's like the union putting on a Bacienda night where they play lots of stone roses and happy mondays.
