Heckling outside the Library?

Postby Spaceman Spiff on Tue Dec 05, 2006 12:14 pm

Just curious what everyone thought.
I think its great that students have a forum style area where they can advertise and publicise for student affairs and events but should it be right outside the library, im getting kinda tired of having leaflets thrust at me or shout at for a various show or another as I enter the lib. Just a general grib:)

It can be very annoying, but I suppose the reasoning is that the library is somewhere everyone is likely to go on a regular basis.

Sometimes I make myself laugh.

I just ignore them and walk straight through them. Plus if they can see someone walking past with a book in one hand and a laptop bag in the other why do still try and hand out the leaflet. Where am I going to put it*? Between my teeth?

*don't answer that question.

I've admired the innovation shown sometimes for promotion outside the library.

I remember one time when there was a bed set up, and what appeared to be a person trapped inside a white cloth bag, who rolled around on top of it crying out moans of ecstacy...

...cant remember what they were advertising (a debate?), but I still remember it to this day which in my eyes made it work!

Having leafleted on a few occasions myself, I usually try to be polite and say no thank you. It is shocking what lengths some people go to avoid you. I recall one girl leaving the library with her headphones in, and then upon seeing us took out her phone to mime call. I assume it was a mime call because she didn't take her headphones out first.

While it may have been a good bit of avdertising because you remember it, it obviously wasn't that good cos you didn't go to the event. At least I'm guessing that you didn't because you can't remember what event there were promoting...

I always choose the time getting into and out of the library to change the song on my iPod. Works like a charm.

But seriously, I don't want to be advertised too when I'm going to the library. Chances are that if I'm going to the library I have way to much work to even think about going to ballroom dancing or attending a random clubs ball.

Really, the trick is to walk behind them, then they never even see you. Works like a charm every time.

The library advertisements can be irritating. Worse than that however, is the fact that people working in the 'phone shop on Market Street have started harassing passers-by asking if they can "ask a quick question."

The question, for those who are interested, is what type of mobile do you have. The woman seemed incredulous when I informed her that I do not own one.

I remember the bed stunt... though my memory is a little hazy. I think it was for a referendum as to whether the Association should encourage the university to adopt an ethical investment policy. The 'yes' campaign was co-ordinated by the One World society. There was a person in the bed completely covered who thrashed about wildly whilst simulating orgasm, ie. shouting "yes, yes, YEEEEESSSSSSS!"

I thought it was brilliant!

You know what's worse than people flyering outside the library...people not bothering to!

Seriously, all I ever hear is people moaning about not being informed about whats going on for them in St Andrews, that societies are cliquey and don't reach out to new members, that noone knows what the SRC is meant to be doing for them etc yet the minute people try to inform them they complain about being spammed by emails or being harrassed by someone attempting to give them a flyer.

Sometimes I think students wouldn't be happy unless they received a hand written telegram for everything, and even then they'd complain that it wasn't word processed.

General etiquette while flyering appears to be that if you walk behind us, behind the railings, you are not heckled. Standard practice.

On the other hand, where else can we let people know about productions, sell tickets, promote societies, and everything else? As for 'ballroom dancing', that would be MY society, and James and I were the only ones flyering. We weren't rude, or confrontational, just smiled, handed out flyers and occasionally played music. I don't mind if people say 'no thank you', but looking straight through us, or deliberately ignoring us completely is pretty bloody rude. The number of people who say they haven't heard of anything til afterwards is rising. Plus, you guys deserve heckling if you'll pester the plays selling tickets about Christmas Ball tickets, when it's common knowledge they've sold out, no one is there, and two of us have constructed a sign to hold saying 'Christmas Ball sold out, do not ask us'! :P

And that said, you have to be pretty inovative to catch people's eyes these days. One of the ticket sellers from 'Shrew' was doing a mock-beggar impression, pleading for ticket-sales to feed his biscuit habit. It got laughs, wasn't intrusive, and also got sales. Heckling is good for us socs and events, so put up with it, or get good at sneaking in to the library!

I don't go near the library but I think it is perfectly acceptable to totally ignore and stare "straight through" you people.

Yup that was the one! Not an event after all, and I did vote!

Raising awareness is just as good an effort as actually getting people interested in the thing you are trying to promote, so being able to recall that one over hundreds of other 'promotions' (i.e. handing out flyers) should deserve a pat on the back.

How would you feel if the university started charging companies and letting them flyer outside the library?

I only ask because someone wanted it thus a few years ago and I thought it would piss students off. But I've dealt with the companies that would buy such a service and I think they'd rather be on Market St/ outside the Union or just buy the University 1,000 mousepads with their company logo on it.

What if it wasn't a company selling you something but advertising a careers event?
