McDonalds in St Andrews

Postby Bread Roll on Fri Dec 15, 2006 2:54 pm

I heard a rumour that the old Global unit on Market Street is going to be a McDonalds. Does anyone know anything about this? Or is it just a vicious rumour?

Last time McDonalds applied to set up shop on Market Street, I'm informed they were turned down because they wanted an illuminated sign.

No doubt whatever they try, they'll face a heck of a rough ride by the Town Council.

I'd rather not see a McDonalds in town - it just doesn't seem the town for it.

The old Global unit is going to be the new unit for that outdoor shop beside Subway...can't remember what its name is! I was in it yesterday and the woman mentioned it.

So do people think Alphabet actually put Global out of business?

SHould we expect Alphabet to move to a more central location?

...dont know why I'm asking all these questions when i don't even live in St.A anymore!?!

various town by-laws prevent things like MacDonalds, Burger King etc from being built in St Andrews. I don't really know why this doesn't apply to other chains like Subway though.

Global put Global out of business is my guess.

Too much utter shite on the shelves for one store.

There's only so many times you can watch Playmate of the Apes before you want to watch a real film. Also, did they sort their films in ANY sensible way, other than "new films" and "not new films"?

I can tell you now its not any by-laws. It is Peter Michael's and the Merchant's Association. PM's put a stop to Harry Ramsdens application for a chip shop years ago.

So not only does PMs serve bad food, it stops other people from selling bad food too?

Then why can't they shut down KFB >:(

Re: McDonalds, the council might not let the them, but more impoportantly it wouldn't be commercially viable, the Maccy Ds in Durham closed after only a few years and Durham is a similar but larger town.

Re Global: the new DVD section of Library put them out of business, and it may do the same to Alphabet.

Re Senethro: What the hell have you got against the institution that is KFB, and PMs deliveries are great when you get the munchies but are incapable of any action.

Global closed because a) their rent was doubled and b) they were only offered a 10 year lease.

Apparently.

I thought, an im pretty sure, that Global closed because the owner done some tax evasion. The entire company closed down hasn't it? its the same for a few branches back home in glasgow. I know i read this in the news but not entirely sure if every single global has closed.

Don't think MacDonalds will get right into the centre of town. I've heard that they have bought the now redundant Somerfield store.

The bloke in Somerfield two days ago said that nobody had bought it, and it was to stand derelict.

Though, the age-old rumour of a M&S Simply Food has reared its head again - a chap that works where I work told me that by March it will be a Simply Food. I somehow seem to treat this rumour with the contempt of my dashed hopes so many times before.
