we just rescued a boy dalmation and it spent most of its life in a garage. now its going wild in our house, trying to mate with our neutered labrador (who's showing teeth) and even the male cat... and trying to suck any soft toys it can set its paws on.. does anyone know a good way to get the animal to settle into the house easier. i know it will have a settling in period, i just wondered if there are things that can be done to make it more comfortable with its surroundings and less interested in the labrador and cat...

I'd keep it in a single room at first! Then gradually introduce it to the rest of the house. Your other pets should be introduced to it for only a short period. You're overexposing it, and moving too quickly! It's not even used to your family for a start . . of course it's going crazy! Also, how old it is it? Really it should be neutered by two if it's going to have an effect on its behaviour.

Did you stop to consider the fact that a rescue dog that's spent its life in isolation might find it very difficult to cope with being thrown into a house with other pets? You're lucky it's not trying to hurt them.

Dalmations can quite often be at least partially deaf so if you're finding it difficult to train, try using hand signals more than voice signals. Of course, you don't say how old it is, the older it is the more difficult it will be to train it.

And the Empress is right - you need to gradually introduce it to other pets or they just end up scared of each other.

You must have dreamt it Midget.

Is there an "I've just found a dog - is there an RSPCA or similar charity I can turn to; one that has experience of such matters?" board?

Excellent idea.

Put it in a crate in front of a high speed train.

Sorted.

Looks like you're more wound up about people getting wound up on The Sinner than they are.

I was just raising an eyebrow, boyo.

Genius!!

Yeah seriously, put it on advice board. We don't care about dogs showing teeth and whether they're neutered or not. Though I'm sure its all very sad and whatever etc etc

If you want it to learn in a stern but fair way then you may benefit from using the D.O.N.G.L.E method. Google it.

If she was interested in Google, she'd never have posted it in the first place.

Well, I care . . plus at least it's a better thread than most of them lately - either sanctimonious sneering or random union plugs. If it wasn't for the need to procrastinate while working on the computer, I'd abandon it completely. It's been astonishingly tedious this semester. The Sinner was always cruel, but at least it used to be fast-paced, diverse and funny.

Well no, because she didn't know the method i suggested, thus was not able to find out about it as she didn't know it existed.

Seconded. I've said it so many times but I'll say it again, in bold, in a booming, Brian Blessed-style voice:

THE BBC LINKS MUST CEASE OR THERE WILL BE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES!

Edit: Orginally I wrote 'severe remuneration', not entirely sure what 'remuneration' meant... Turns out it's nothing threatening at all. But you have to let me off because it's my birthday.
