I wouldn't be surprised if the Uni Desktop background thing broke election rules.

Can someone confirm/deny this?

I checked when I sat down to Tom d'Ardenne's grinning mug in the anatomy museum and there doesn't seem to be anything against it, although the senior may correct me on that.

Although if any of these computers were to be hooked up to a projector (e.g. computers in lecture theatres/seminar rooms) then it would break election rules, as projectors may not be used.

This is why the rules were in place originally, any candidate who complains that they were ridiculous would do well to see how many people they're pissing off now the rules (for facebook) have been relaxed.

Oh I'm fully aware of this, and I disagree with the facebook rules being changed. If anything I don't think it should be used as a campaign method at all because it has the potential to harrass people (as it's doing now) and also interferes with non-election stuff, like the aforementioned hijacking of groups for campaigning. It is also bound to make people less likely to vote at all, let alone for the people who are creating these groups and campaigning on facebook.

Very annoying indeed, I have received a good half-dozen invitations already today. The groups appearing on the News Feed were enough, surely?

Edit: Oh, there's another one...

Everyone always complains that the election rules are too strict. So, now they are trying it their way.

If they send you unsolicited e-mails and it annoys you - don't vote for them.

I'd also like to add that there is always a great deal of pressure on the EOC during the election weeks. It is a thankless job and the people involved put a tremendous amount of time and energy into keeping the election going.

But, TBH, the EOC is tiny this year. There are 8 students (only 3 of whom have really been involved before):
producing all those posters/flyers/badges, stamping them all individually, producing the 100 words booklets, running the hecklings, producing all the thousands of ballot papers, running the actual election, taking all those complaints and the rest....

These people have lives/ essay deadlines/ tutorials to prepare for/ reading to do. They need all the breaks they can get.

I've received so many invites today - and all the people inviting me know I'm on the EOC!

Yes we know it's annoying, but the candidates were unhappy that they couldn't invite people to Facebook things (even though it is classed as mass electronic campaigning) - for them, the feeds *weren't* enough. Also, it seems that well-meaning supporters in the various groups kept inviting people when they weren't meant to, despite so many clear warnings that they were not to do anything that resulted in an email being sent to people.

Since it's so hard to police, we ended up doing what people have clamoured for in previous elections - removing rules for Facebook. However, everybody is now finding out why some of these rules are in place for a reason. It's going to be interesting to see the votes on Friday in comparison to the various degrees of spamming employed by various candidates.

At least a couple more students might realise that there ARE elections this year, irrelevant of whom they vote for.

I don't think that will help, since peeople are obviously using complete group/friends lists to send out the same invitation to everyone. As such they will never see your picture.

Oh whatever! Like it's difficult to press the decline button a couple of times.

Harrasment... Or perhaps just healthy electioneering? Alternatively, we could just bugger the whole election thing and have the court appoint our representatives for us. No more bothering, ever. Fun times!

Besides; anything that annoys the apathetic majority enought to make them voice their opinions (Even if they are complaints about aforsaid annoyance) has got to be a good thing!

Now some people weren't happy about the content of that last post. And we can't have someone not happy. Not on the internet.
