The Union Website

Postby munchingfoo on Fri Mar 16, 2007 6:04 pm

I think the fact that the only online place I could find listing the places and times of todays elections was on www.thesinner.net speaks wonders for how utterly shite and pointless the union's website is.

Perhaps it is on the unions site somewhere, but it isn't entirely obvious.

We should just redirect yourunion.net to the sinner.

I found it (http://www.yourunion.net/content/index.php?page=4380) by searching for "vote", but I'm not quite sure how you'd get there in the hierarchy of menus... it doesn't appear to be under Elections 2007, anyway.

While you're playing on yourunion, may I recommend www.yourunion.net/charities?

Shameless plug, yes.

I'll also take this opportunity to further grumble about one of my questions to the DoES candidates (which no one answered...cowards). Why isn't there a calendar of all student events on the website? Far too many things are scheduled on the same day, it makes no sense. You could even make it Wiki and then wouldn't have to put much work into it.

When does www.yourunion.net expire? I say we swoop in, renew it and change the pointer to the sinner.

Any events listed on the Union's minisites (such as Debates, Charities etc) are automatically listed in the events section of the union's pages.

Any society can have a minisite, and thus feed their events into the main system.

The Charities minisite looks great by the way David!

I think perhaps you missed my point, try reading the title of the thread.

As I suggested in my Saint interview, I would like to see the website allocated an amount of money to get a proper job done on the pages. I think if it were tabs leading to other specific pages then the navigation would be so much simpler.

I would have answered this thread sooner if I used the sinner mearly as much as I used to and if I hadn't been out n about all day geting voted for (hopefully, i guess we'll see how that turns out...!!!)

An e mail was sent out to all students on Wed 14 March just before 3pm giving a link to the 100 words statements of each candidate, and listing the times of each polling station.

Sorry to keep going on about this, but in the Union we are so often criticised about not telling students anything, but we do, people just don't read it. I even resorted to offering chocolate to anyone who would read my e mails!

When I said "what emails?", I actually meant "I didn't receive any emails." Although to be fair to you, a glitch of this sort is probably due to an out of date mailing list or IT problem. I'll ask other postgrads to see if they received it.

I was talking to Nicola Foister about this (the current SSC PG Officer) and she said that this lack of emails seemed to be very common to postgrads - something for people to look into, I think.

And in reply to the initial post, email is the offical method of communication for the University and more people check their emails than look at the Union website so it was a more effective way of getting the message out there.

That isn't a reply to the initial post. My point isn't that I couldn't find the data, I could, just not on the union website.

The union website contains very little useful content.

If you had replied with a further sentence of "and as such we will be removing the website to enable us to concentrate on our e-mail system" then that would have been a response to my initial post.

Worth bearing in mind, also, is that a website with content can be checked by any student (or staff member) at any time, according to their own wishes and can, equally, be ignored. Emails, less so. You either unsubscribe or block them and then you're cut off from that stream of information (something most postgrads would be happy to be - until there's a separate 'union' for them), and that information only comes to you when the Association decides it should.

In short - emails suck, a decent website is the best option, and one that so many other institutions seem to manage - by keeping it simple and up to date, not by piling on mountains of worthless, pointless rubbish.

See, I was replying to the bit about how you could only find the election times on the Sinner, not on the Union website. The point is that you didn't need to look online for the polling times because the information was sent directly to every student on the linkup list (though it seems a lot of postgrads do't get them, they must have ticked the box about keeping their information private).

It wasn't on the Union website, simply because if we had put it there and not in an email, no one would have looked there for it and everyone would have believed that the polling stations were exactly the same as always. The only website that helped with the election polling times was Facebook, due to the sheer number of groups and events created for the day. We only decided to put the times on the Sinner to stop people whining that they hadn't been told by a website. Most students in St Andrews prefer having the information spoon-fed to them; if they have to look for it, most simply don't bother.

And it's not as if the Sinner has a lot of useful content.
