Yeah I was just searching the web for a hint of news too!

Did Tom make it back into the oval office?

Yes. He did.

Well done Tom.

And my heartfelt commiserations to all his opponents.

Any news on the other sabbatical posts?
Strategic Plan? Opinion Poll? :)

From the little that I can remember from before I left and what I have been told -

Debates - Tom Cahn
Arts/Divinity Senate - Laura Wilson
Science/Medicine Senate - Rob Fett
Chair - Rachael Whitbread
Performing Arts - Isabel Hunter
Absent Students - Karleen Coull
Community Relations - Matthew Guest

Some more close than others. I hope some official numbers will be posted here soon.

Such a shame. With the notable exceptions of Mmes Whitbread, Ormisher and Rannard and Messrs Cahn, Hunt and Savage, such an unequivocally gimpy field of officers has never been elected... before now.

I would also seriously encourage everyone to disregard Mr Public's post above. Not only is it entirely biased, but it makes no sense, and having attended the hecklings i must say how particularly impressed I was with several of the other candidates, particularly (but not limited to) Miss Hunter and Mr Shield. I supported a lot of the candidates he mentioned, but there's no legitimate basis (ideological or otherwise) for writing off the rest as he does. It's just mean spirited and false.

Quoting David Bean from 04:36, 17th Mar 2007
having attended the hecklings i must say how particularly impressed I was with several of the other candidates, particularly (but not limited to) Miss Hunter and Mr Shield.

Thank you. Unfortunately, only about half of the people I actively supported were elected. However, the number of contested positions and the high turnout are of great benefit to all students and are a testament to the good work done by this year's outgoing members and officers.

Firstly, I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Bella and her whole team on the Election Officers Committee- I am sorry left you guys, but you were more than capable without me.

Secondly, this has been one of the best elections I have ever witnessed in St Andrews, and one of the most memorable weeks of my six years here. Thank you so much to all involved.

Finally, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to those who have been elected, and commiserations to those who were not. I remember Laura once commenting to me about lack of competition for posts and the fact that the SRC is so large. I said that it was important to make sure that those who are keen and interested can find something to get involved in where they can make a contribution. Tonight the standard of the candidates was so high that I am really sorry that many will not be on SRC.

Personally, I am thrilled with this election- sounds funny coming from someone who ot beaten! As most of you *should* know, I ran this election for a laugh, and I was really touched, and completely shocked, that so many people voted for me. Thanks.

Once again, well done to every candidate, win or lose, and welcome to the Union to all those who won!

Lee

From the positions that David mentions, excluding performing arts and pres., none seem to have been a one horse race, which is nice to see.

Edit: Of course, I assume some of the one horse races were one horse races though. Was there a successful RON vote?

So who *is* JohnQPublic, who now seems to have it in for everyone, not just Tom d'Ardenne? Don't call people "gimpy" when they haven't had a chance to do anything yet!

Given the nature of previous posts, my best guess would narrow it down to an american or someone who studied at an international school(with American grading).

I think it's fantastic. It's fantastic that so many people turned out to vote, and it's fantastic that we've elected such a great bunch of guys.

It seems to me that it's not only the association's strategy that's changing, but also the culture of the place - everyone works together so well and is so open and friendly... witness Ian Cupples on the polling stations and counting the ballots - because he's had sabbaticals this year who have engaged with him and made him into a part of the team. It seems to me that this culture of approachability and envolvement is what's bred such a hotly contested election and such a great turnout.

All the publicity on facebook has definitely helped though. Perhaps we should leave it deregulated...

Anyway, well done everyone. I'll be in different pastures next year, but I think you're in for a great year.
