Hey,

Should probably have found out earlier, but oh well....

Where do we go to get things bound?
How much does it cost?
How long does it take?

Thanks a lot!!!

The Bindery. It's near what used to be Somerfield, Bassaguard Garage and NG's. I think it was £4 per copy for the average undergraduate dissertation when I went in January. It took about 10 minutes - it depends on how busy they are.

I understand that you need to go to the bindery for things like theses, though reprographics also seem to do binding which might be suitable for personal stuff (they're on the Scores I believe). I was told £3.50 for 30A4 pages, but I don't suspect there will be much variation in that over different page quantities.

Though for theses and hardback bindings, it's more likely to be around £20-£30.

Does the General Office not do binding at a much cheaper price than the University bindery?

The general office does comb binding. I'm not sure how expensive it is though. I have a feeling though that its quite reasonable.

The bindery at the union is cheaper than the official one -- I can't remember exactly how much I paid, but it was less than £2 for ~50 pages. If you have to hand in your work to the library you'll have to use the official one though, because the library doesn't accept comb bindings (at least not the Maths one).

For disserations departments usually have very specific requitements for the presentation of the document, and most, if not all, specify that it must be bound at the bindery with that hard back type stuff.

The comb binding is good for my review essays. The fourth year project on the other hand will have to be hard bound. Do any Psychologists know if there are guidlines for colour of binding for the JH review? There is nothing in the handbook.

It must depends on the department. The School of History has no specific requests, just that any dissertation is bound. Although the Union General Office might be cheaper, I am going to go to Reprographics or the bindery to get mine done - comb-binding just don't look as professional.

I heard a rumour the real bindery (by NGs) has closed down and general office and reprographics are the only places to get bound. Anyone know if there's truth to this?

There was an article about this in the local paper quite a while ago...I think it's not until the end of this term that the bindery will close, although I could be wrong!

The library website still has a page for it:

http://www-library.st-andrews.ac.uk/Ser ... ndery.html

However, the site hasn't been updated in a while, so it could have closed. You could always try to email them on bindery@ to find out.

Isn't the bindery responsible for binding all the academic journals? If so, where would that be done? Reprographics?

My tutor rang the bindery and apparently they're open until June. I don't know if they open seasonally or what. I'm quite miffed that repro is not in the chem building anymore, used to be so convenient!

If it helps, I was there this lunchtime getting something bound, and they seem to be operating as normal (and certainly aren't shut).

This rumour is definitely doing the rounds - even our School secretary told me she thought it was closed!

Happy binding.....
