Why are so many people voting for the Conservatives on the poll?

Seriously: why?!

25 people?

Ugh.

I can smell the stench of souls rotting from here.

An excellent, constructive way of starting a thread. Well done.

Have you *seen* the demographics of St Andrews students. Think of it as less of a disappointment and more as a fact of life...

I am not certain if I am meant to be worried or happy about the fact that I have been the only person to vote for the Solidarity party so far!! Surely there must be more people in St Andrews of a Socialist view point than just me! Never mind, At least I know where I am at.

Has anyone actually paid attention to what Boris Johnson has been saying? (difficult I realise) But given some of the things he's said to us I think he's very much in favour of considerably higher tuition fees - and I wonder how many of the people voting in that poll could actually afford to come to St Andrews should the Tories get their way...

He's in favour of considerably higher tuition fees, while continuing to hold down lecturer's pay. The mind boggles.

I would also wager the number of Scots saying they will vote Conservative in the poll will be close to zero. I have only met one Scottish Conservative at St Andrews, and he was Conservative because he is trying to become English. It's all very strange.

I don't think st andrews students are entirely representative of the scottish nation's voting intentions...

This certainly differs from the national picture. It's interesting to see that the SNP are doing so poorly in this poll given that they are poised to have the biggest majority over the other parties after the election. Also, it show how Labour are really well and truly high and dry now and in serious trouble with their electioneering. I do think there is still alot of Tory support out there but it will only result in MSPs being elected through the list system. It'll be interesting to see what happens in this constituency which is, I think, strong Lib Dem territory given that Menzies Campbell is the MP.

You have a point. Young people being bastards is always more disheartening though. It's all in the eyes; look into the eyes of a young Tory or Republican and they're dead inside.

Maybe people are picking the Conservatives because they actually agree with some of their policies. Perhaps they believe that people should be allowed to keep more of their own money, and that they should be able to pass it on to their children without the government taking half of it because 'it knows best'. Or maybe they believe that central government should be smaller, and that the current strategy of passing legislation from on high to solve every little problem is ridiculous. Or maybe they just think the current government is just so utterly inept that they couldn't organize a nun shoot in a nunnery.

Or you can keep harping on about how everyone who votes Conservative only does so because they must be a yah like Mummy and Daddy, and they want to keep those nasty working people down. Whatever makes you feel better.

Iain Smith (Lib Dem) has been the MSP here since 1999 and is running for re-election.

i'd be, indeed I am, much more worried about the 16 (to date) people who have voted for the SNP on the poll. God help us.

Not sure to what extent it will come into effect in Scotland though, especially if Mr Salmond gets in, sure he won't bring in high tuition fees.

Result of which will be the English Unis, now rich on higher student fees, will start poaching the best staff from universities such as ourselves.

Which is why a certain member of the IR department believes in a few years time St Andrews will become a private university, the cost of which will probably be greater than the Conservatives will charge. Hopefully the Tories would give us back some income that fucking Gordon Brown keeps taking so offset it too. He's like the Sheriff of Nottingham
