Bacon

Yes, I know its another BBC link but I feel that as students it's a very important one to us.

Saying that, maybe 1000 hours of research is a little excessive. My favourite quote has got to be 'tough or chewy bacon is a turn-off'.

700 variations? Should've really started with a stochastic screening then optimized the conditions.

Never been a fan of bacon that's too crunchy, me.

Next time I make myself a bacon sandwich I'm going to grill it for seven minutes at precisely 240c to see if that is significantly better than my usual 'stick it under the grill at a random setting until it looks cooked' technique.

It also makes no mention whatsoever of butter, which even a vegitarian will tell you is a key ingredient.

Amateurs.

Nor does it mention the Brown vs Red Sauce debate. Nor how much fat/rind it has on it. Nor if it's even pig bacon at all! (I'm quite partial to that turkey-bacon stuff myself...)

I will have to see how this turns out though...240C for seven minutes...need to remember that!

It's ridiculous isn't it? There are people out there pouring millions into cancer research but we're still subjected to sub-par food research.

I just pan-fried by bacon, 3 pieces, on a large white bap - buttered and a dollop of brown sauce.

Schoolboy error I'd say. Should I throw it away and start over?

I know I might well be in a minority, but why does the research assume that bacon should be crunchy? I hate it crunchy. Surely so long as it tastes good and doesn't give you food poisoning that's all that matters?

but good news:

Therefore the perfect bacon sarnie must be accompanied by a glass of red. Huzzah!

You have got to love being a scientist. We will go to great lengths to research something that is good to eat so we can grow into fat bastards and get paid for it at the same time!

Like when my sister worked in the quality control lab in a Nestle factory and they had to test the chocolate bars to ensure they were good enough. Some of the tests were scientific but most just involved eating the chocolate!
