Good Vegetarian Pub Food

Postby Christina on Mon Apr 09, 2007 9:20 pm

Hi. Can anyone tell me where to get decent vegetarian (or regular for that matter) pub food in St Andrews? Used to live in Aberdeen, and it's one of the things I miss the most...

the Japanese restaurant, L'orient has vegetarian bento boxes which are great! also the veggie burger at drouthy's is pretty good as you can have practically anything on it you want :)

Yes, where the Riever used to be.

If you go vegetarian, you have to accept the consequences of your actions and accept the sub-par offerings.

You can't have your cake and eat it. Unless it's a meat cake, of course.

Aikman's/Cellar has some good options, can't remember them off hand, but I've always eaten well when I've been in there. Plenty of choice as well, even for a veggie like myself.

Drouthy's, Raisin, Central all do different types of burger if I remember right

And there's always nachos at the Whey Pat or Beanscene

Not sure where is good - but I do know that 1 Golf Place is best avoided if you're a veggie.

I used to eat well in Drouthies but I gather it's been taken over by new folks. The Oak Rooms is a bit upmarket but they do lovely Risottos and things like that.

What St Andrews really needs is a Wetherspoons pub!

As far as I'm aware, the North Point, the Westport, Drouthy's, The Grill House, and Nahm Jim all offer decent fare for vegetarians. At least, I could manage to eat it without rushing to the nearest farm in order to incinerate cow.

Why should you? In my experience, vegetarians are usually much more interesting/adventurous cooks than everyone else, I think because a lot of people are stuck on the idea that a meal is "meat and veg" and think a vegetarian meal thus has to have something substituted for the meat. This, of course, is bollocks, but it does lead to a lot of meat-eaters being poor vegetarian chefs.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Just to push the question even further....Is there anywhere to get a veggie cooked breakfast? You know...like a 'traditional' one?

The Vic used to do a good one - I presume it still does. Lots of tasty veggie sausages, beans, egg, mushroom etc.

Beatons does a good veggie all-day breakfast - at a cheap price too, if memeory serves me at all.

Why should you? Because you're a small minority, not everywhere is going to cater for you, and not everywhere is going to cater for you to the highest of standards. As for the second part, pah, adventurous? Hardly.

oh for goodness sake - isn't it about time people just grew up and let vegetarians and vegans get on with it. None of them are doing any harm so stop trying to prevent them from doing what means a lot to them by attempting to sabotage their every move. Whether or not you like the food is a whole other matter and you are not being asked whether you do or not.
Stop trying to be so damn political - St Andrews has room for anyone from any persuasion.
