Booking System or more Short Loan?

Postby RobFett on Tue Apr 24, 2007 4:17 pm

If it meant you could take books out of short loan whenever the library is open (using Self Issue) would you mind if the booking system was suspended?

(The library are thinking of trailing this next semester)

As I have graduated and left st. a's im probably not really qualified to offer my opinion on this but will do anyway - I would say keep the booking system. The booking system saves so much time and I personally found it a great help, especially when I was living further out of town.

I like the booking system, that way I know I will have the books I need when I need them.

Keep the booking system. It means you know when you're able to work and the over night loan and weekend loans are really handy too.

Would that mean that there'd be no overnight short loans then either?

Certainly keep the booking system, the days before IR essays are due Short Loan is the only place where you can get your books in a semi-civilised way if you book them. Just imagine the scrabble for books if people couldn't book them - mad!

Wasn't this idea suggested last year and got a resounding no from all concerned?

Keep the booking system - it would be harsh on people who don't live in St Andrews and need to make a special journey in to get books if this was abolished.

I'm a graduate but I agree with the others on here the booking system was great because it helped me to organise my workload better.

Another irrelevant graduate view, but I found the booking system invaluable. With a bit of forward planning it was really useful, especially to be able to book short loans over a weekend.

Absolutely, keep the booking system. To suspend it would cause chaos, and as someone said it would make getting books for those farther out of town a real nightmare. You can pretty much get short loans out until just before the library closes anyway, an extra couple of hours once the staff have gone home wouldn't make much difference.

Being a science student I have no idea what it does. But yeah! Keep the booking system!! It seems to work for the majority, no?

There are a few things related to the booking system that would get tricky if it was removed. For example, you can only renew short loans at the moment if nobody has booked them. Without the booking system, imagine a poor soul waiting for the book to come back, only for someone to renew it right before their eyes... And even if the renewing thing was removed, I can well imagine people running to the other side of the desk to snatch the book back again.

Also, the self check out machines are way too faulty at the moment to work properly for short loan books.

Keep the booking system! yes its a pain if its booked up for days on end, but in that case the library should probably be getting another copy and scrapping the booking system really wouldnt help. if a book is in high demand the booking system is the only way of making sure you can get hold of it. the only other option is to keep wandering into the library on the offchance or hanging around when it is due back - and chances are it will be late and or at an inconvenient time or else was put back earlier than its due time and has been taken out again...

I wonder if it would be possible to do both - when the short loan section is usually closed, why not open it, turn off the beepy detector things and allow people to go in, get their books and scan them themselves using the self issue machines?
