Children's party: cake, ice cream and lame games. Get people to dress as their favourite characters (kids' TV/film/game/book/whatever). I did it for my 21st and it was AWESOME. I even had a magician (thanks again Tom! :P)

Song title theme - i.e. come dressed as the subject or title of famous chart songs.

Bad taste parties are always delectably scandalous.

Pick a letter, and dress as something beginning with that letter. Huge scope (and great fun guessing the obscure one).
For a 'P' Party a few years back, a mate of mine dressed as a Politician, Pervert and Philanderer (he wore a suit with a rosette).

Cluedo! Everyone comes as either Mrs Elizabeth Peacock, Miss Vivienne Scarlet, Col. Michael Mustard, Rev. Jonathan Green, Prof. Peter Plum or Mrs. Blanch White. Or to really stretch the point, just put on a DJ and pretend to be Richard Madeley.

The invitations write themselves: "You are invited... to a murder!"

You can't have a Cluedo party without Mr Black.

As for themes, how about wearing something of a set colour, i.e. no real dress code, apart from it being red/pink/blue.

I like the London Underground idea, where everyone comes as a station. I suppose it could be adapted to other things. It's better if you're doing written invitations though, because you can send people the station they have to come as.

Building on the colours idea, ive heard of one where you go wearing as many different colours as you can and by the end of the night you aim to be wearing all one colour. 'Spose its not actually a theme though...

Actually his name was Dr Black, but I was referencing the TV series, which he didn;t appear in.

traffic light parties can be fun - come in red, yellow and green and leave in one colour.

another suggestion would be a Ned Night ie come dressed in tracksuit bottoms, fred perry jumpers, baseball caps etc and drink lots of buckfast and white lightning. (seemingly you can only get buckfast from KB stores off lamond drive)
