I for one am grateful for the trustworthy continuity in FW. I must avidly oppose calling it 'Orientation', though.

I've never really been to many of the Union's FW events, but well done to Oli for some interesting graphic design and what looks to be a shiny new logo.

Wey! Live Bands, that's me! (among others...)

Is there still a need for volunteers? I want a t-shirt.

I'm sure there is - just email Maggie on mw11@st-and.ac.uk and tell her you want to volunteer.

Do we have any idea who the acts might be in this year's line-up? Or is it all very hush-hush as usual?

It's generally hush-hush until the full freshers week programme/booklet is revealed, usually around the end of August.

I think this is Student Support's fault. They decide the name, and the Union keeps it for continuity's sake.

I can confirm* that the Union is currently in negotiations with Keith Chegwin, Paul Daniels and MC Hammer.

Thanks for the comments.

The lineup hasn't yet been finalised (contracts are still being negotiated and some agents are slow in responding) so we haven't publicised any definites just yet.

Once we have confirmation, we'll release the full lineup.

The logo is pretty swish.

Yeah, the new logo is pretty cool, tho' I do wish they'd do away with this condescending 'your' nonsense. I tried to get them to replace it with the coat of arms throughout...

Thinking about this issue of acts and such, I know DoESs love to get names in for the sake of being able to boast of having booked them for the rest of their lives, but has anyone ever done any financial analysis as to whether the investment is actually worth it? I mean, in my experience people will pretty much go to the Union during Orientation whatever's on, so does spending more money on bigger names during that period actually generate significant extra revenue?

Might it not, for instance, be better to save the money and use it to bring someone in later on in the term by the time things have started to flag, promote the hell out of it and thereby create a resurgence of interest in the place for the next few years? They could even get a top band to headline an event, and then put some of the Music Fund's student bands on first, so that they could generate added interest by advertising whom they'd supported, thereby making them more of a draw in the future, and helping create a more sustainable revenue stream.

Worth thinking about, no?

Someone should seriously stand for DoES as a joke candidate based on that. It's almost as good as Darth Vader for President...
