Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

If you want to get to the roots of today's indie rock, listen to some really strange but really good music, don't mind singing saws, and want to hear what inspired, amongst others, the Arcade Fire...

Mike Oldfield - Amarok

Single greatest magnum opus of progressive rock ever made, 60 minutes of glorious multilayered multifaceted aural joy. You'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll change your life.

Shame that the vinyl is so poor though.

I second Freaker's nomination... Neutral Milk Hotel are amazing! 'On Avery Island' is also good but 'Aeroplane' is their best.

Also try:

the Decemberists (all their stuff's good, but 'Picaresque' and 'the Crane Wife' are my favorites)
The Be Good Tanyas - Hello Love
Ben Harper - Fight for your mind
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days

these are all vastly different, but check them out!

I'll second a recommendation for Twin Cinema, and add in Stars - In our bedroom after the war.

A third for Twin Cinema, saw TNP last summer in Central Park and they were fantastic! And the new Editors album, An End Has a Start, is quite good (listened through only a few times). And if you're in the mood for drunken rock, try Hundred Miles Off by The Walkmen

I would second the Decemberists - Picaresque is good.

If you want something a bit different you could try Bellowhead; a self-proclaimed folk big band. They have two discs out: Burlesque and E.P.onymous. Very highly recommended, especially if you have a sense of theatre about you.
