An open complaint

Postby pissed off. on Mon Oct 15, 2007 10:46 am

Firstly, I have connections within the association, which is why I'm posting anonymously regarding this matter.

I've just finished watching the Scotland football match in the union which was on the 5 small SubTv screens whilst the England game was on the big screen. The reason given for this is that they had advertised being able to show both games, but since the England game was on terrestrial TV and the Scotland game on Sky, then this is the only way they could do it with their current setup.

I think that showing the England game was an absolutely APPALLING decision. I personally counted 180+ people watching the Scotland game on the small screens and LESS THAN 20 watching the England game. This is a ratio of more than 9:1. SURELY the fact that the England game was more widely accessible to all Students (because it was on TERRESTRIAL TV should have given it less priority.

Furthermore, If it is not recognised by Rich Robinson (who's call it was) that this was a bad decision, can I please have ASSURANCE that if I were to turn up with around 15 friends that wanted to watch a sporting event being showed on terrestrial TV that the Union would put it on the big screen for me so that 150+ people could watch their Sky event on the small screens?

I'm sure all of the 180+ people watching the Scotland game were pissed off at this (180 is even lower than it could have been because I SAW lots of people leave at half time to go watch the game in OTHER PUBS), could we have an explanation for this?

Didn't you provide your own explanation in your second paragraph?

Who fucking cares? I had to listen to it at work on the radio but don't mind because WE WON 3-1. The big screen in the union is shit quality anyway.

As you yourself have stated, the reason the Scotland game was not shown on the big screen was due to technical reasons - the terrestrial feed could not be shown on subTV, so had to be shown on the projector; meaning the Sky feed had to go on the small screens. The sound for the Scotland game was piped through the speakers though, the England game was left mute.

I'm sure there were countless other places showing the Scotland match on a big screen.

It's a marvelous thing, choice.

So you know that they couldn't do what you wanted, but you're going to complain about it anyway? Wow, I'm not surprised you wanted to keep your name to yourself.

Let me get this straight - by your reckoning, there were MORE people watching a match shown on MORE screens?

The sound for the multi-screen match was being broadcast?

Why would you want to watch an event on the large screen with no sound? That sounds pretty weird to me. You'd be better off sitting at home, close to your TV with the sound off, while people have fun behind you.

I really don't understand your complaint. Or why it's "open".
Thanks for giving us something to think about though.

I agree with what everyone is saying about the small tv situation (I don't mind having more angles to watch it from), but something needs to be done about the framerate on the Sub TV screens. Does anyone else find the footage choppy on those screens?

The frame rate/poor quality image/whatever on the Sub TV screens is something I've definitely noticed. It's not horrendous, but enough to make it noticeable.

That said, the projector is hardly much of an improvement in quality. Maybe something to be looked in to.

This open complaint, however, is - as everyone else has pointed out - a bit silly. To say the least.

Just playing devils advocate, but:

I think the original poster was bemoaning the fact that the England game shouldn't have been shown and that the Scotland game could have been on all the screens since the England game was more widely available via terrestrial TV.

But the OP conceded that the Scotland game couldn't be on the big screen, for issues of subscriptions. So it's a question more of just playing the Scottish game on the small screens, or playing the Scottish game on the small screens with the English game on as well.

He did? Even if he did I'm pretty sure this was untrue.

I think the set-up on the day was probably the fairest. I think the real gripe came from people not knowing which TV they should be watching until 1 minute before kickoff.

If you arrive early to get a seat then find you have to move because the TV changes to a different match, I think you have a small right to be annoyed. Of course, this isn't what the OP was complaining about, and I disagree with his original complaint.

Also - to be fair, if it had been for the for the many complaints from the hundreds of scotish fans, they were planning to put the sound on the england game instead of the Scotish one. This perhaps made people's blood boil a bit too.

I think it was more an issue of NOT playing the England game altogether because it was on terrestrial (which I agreed with cause I was there too) and putting the Scotland game on ALL the screens.

But obviously that couldn't be done at the time since the game was advertised.

Well, that's not vey nice. I don't understand why you want ALL the screens when there's two games on at the same time. I couldn't watch the England game at home. Can't we just share?

Why doesn't the terrestrial feed work on these SubTV screens? I seem to remember we were promised at the time we could show what we wanted on them, (perhaps up to a certain time-limit?), so that this would never be an issue. Maybe someone else who was on the Union board at the time could remind me what the terms were? Or if someone in the know now might advise?

I believe it's a technical issue as opposed to a contractual one.

This complaint isnt about people not being able to watch a certain match on a certain screen, its about Scotland/England favouritism.

I'm English, but I've lived in Scotland for the last few years.

Of the two, Scotland is my favourite country.
But I still like England.

Can't be bothered with football though.
