What's the sinner's view of the remarks made by Kelvin MacKenzie on question time about scotland being a nation of spongers?

My view is he's an idiot. :)

Can someone post a link to the interview in which he said this?

Not an interview, question time.

But here's a link to the video

Hmmm, he was just saying that for a stir though, yeah? I mean, he can't actually believe it, he's just using it to comic/political/money-grabbing effect, surely?

I mean, honestly "Scotland believes...". Some people...

I had what may be deemed the misfortune to read some of his columns in The Sun over the summer - he does seem to like commenting on Scotland being a "nation of spongers" and suchlike. Can't say I think that much of the fellow myself.

Amusingly, his column isn't carried in the Scottish rebrand of The Sun.

What he said, however, in his oafish, boorish way had some grounding in fact. We all know that more per head is spent on Scotland than other parts of the UK, we also know that benefit dependency (especially multi-generational) is more common, and that 50%+ of the GDP is in the state sector. Now, none of that makes the Scots per se a nation of spongers, but it does make this part of the UK suck up more than its fair share of resources. He also spoke about the entrepreneurial spirit of the South of England and conveniently forgot about the million or so Scots who took their talents and their spirit their and contributed out of all proportion rather than stay here and sponge, but that wouldn't sell newspapers or appeal to a mean-spirited, low-brow pettiness that is being laughably branded 'English nationalism" and stirred up with the help of rent-a-mouths like Mr Mackenzie.

I noticed that too, but thought it would be uncharitable to point it out. I must be losing my Sinner touch. Even exnihilo sometimes makes mistakes, though rarely ;)

Tayside polic investigate

Postby rham on Sun Oct 14, 2007 8:40 pm

Apparently the Tayside boys in blue are investigating him. Is that because there is no crime in Dundee, looking for a work? It is hard to feel nothing but contempt for our public servants.

As Brendan Beehan (I think) said there is no situation so bad that cannot be made worse by the arrival of a police man.

As to us, have we sunk to level of the [censored, dont want investigated by their polic], a small not quite country attached to England. Who cares about Kelvin, you can find people who will say anything about anything. We need to laugh a bit more, honestly, we are off the Euro championships (possibly).

I guess what comes to mind is how he couldn't get away with replacing the word 'scottish' with 'black' or anything like that..

On another note I'm sure his son goes to Edinburgh Uni, and his surname is Scottish
