Did Macgregor actually do anything that round...
[hr]
Fearghas made numerous obvious contributions in both rounds, answering starter questions that would otherwise have gone unanswered and providing invaluable help on science bonuses (science not being a strong suit for any of the other three of us), whilst never incurring a penalty for an incorrect interruption (more than can be said in my case!).
I want to comment here because it has been suggested that he made a limited contribution to the deliberations on bonus questions (perhaps the origin of the post above), or that I was shutting him out of bonus-related discussions.
The team was arranged with the arts students on my right and Fearghas (our sole science expert) on my left, which meant that I generally turned first to my left or right depending on the content of the bonus. Also, Kelsey (our strongest player) had a very soft-spoken manner and had requested to sit on the far end, meaning that I often had to lean a bit to ensure that I heard exactly what he was saying. The need was particularly pressing after after a miscommunication, which was my fault, caused us to miss a bonus question in round one, for which Alice had identified the correct answer.
Fearghas and I discussed our bonus strategy prior to filming.
Obviously, if he had an answer to a non-science question, I urged that he grab my arm and interrupt immediately with his contribution (as he did with correct answers such as 'mammoth', 'Basque', and 'Air' in the last round). If we were not pressed for time, I often quickly screened answers garnered from Alice & Kelsey with Fearghas prior to answering, ensuring that he had no advance on the response that I was about to give.
The fact that University Challenge tends to prioritise arts/history/politics over science questions explains why I tended to turn right rather than left. It was a pragmatic measure, rather an a reflection on the balance of contributions.
I hope this resolves the matter.
Best,
