What's the deal with closing the union early. I went to meet a friend there at about 12ish and there were a couple of ambulances driving away and everyone seemed to have been cleared out. Is it normal to do this during raisin or was this a special case?

The union has closed at midnight on Raisin Sunday as long as I've been here. In contrast to two years ago, however, the place seemed deserted at 11pm when I was there - in my first year, it took 20 minutes queuing to get a drink!

I have heard on the rumour-mill that the 2007 Foam Fight will be the last to be held in the quad because the foam is destroying the stone of the buildings.

Oh yes, im sure that a brief sprinkling of shaving foam does far more damage than the 365 days of Scottish weather the buildings suffer every year.

I'm going to go with fiction on the reasoning, but it wouldn't surprise me if they invent excuses to move it out onto the North Haugh as has been mooted in the past few years. The university has always taken a very dim view of fun, smiling is to be banned next year too.

The foam doesn't really get on any stonework, so I can't see it really doing so - and the quad does smell wonderful for a few days afterwards!

I have heard the foam and buildings story before, and I can imagine there being some truth to it - I think I remember them cleaning the buildings quite intensely after the last foam fight. The weather harming the buildings is no excuse here - after all, that is a factor beyond human control, whereas whether to allow a foam fight or not isn't.

Does anyone know any more about whether the KK Club cleared up or not this year? They took over many years ago because the university administration was no longer willing to let its own people do it, and threatened to close down the foam fight if nobody else did it, or so I've been told. If they really won't do it any more, and no other student group volunteers to commit themselves to it (although I can very vividly see the SRC scrubbing the quad on Monday afternoon...) then I can see the university threatening to ban the foam fight once more...

In the end, I believe that nothing justifies banning a tradition that is so much a part of student life though, and I'm sure the university is using threats much more as a bargaining chip here rather than to actually go through with them.

How can the foam harm the buildings? Most people "fight" on the lawn and are nowhere near the stonework. Unless people are now either coming equipped with jet propelled cans of shaving foam or are rubbing themselves up against the buildings I can't imagine how they can use that as an argument.

One poor chap in my academic family got shaving gel instead - he had to rub it in his hands, and then run up to people and slap them in the face. A crying shame...

It's a good thing CFCs are now banned in shaving foam; otherwise St Andrews would now be located under a rather massive hole in the ozone layer!

The KK Club were there in force, singing the Gaudie as people entered the quad, and then cleaning up afterwards.
Good work lads!

Eggs and flour were banned from the quad because of damage to the buildngs (have you ever tried to remove wind-dried-sun-baked egg yolk from sandstone?) but I haven't heard anything about foam causing damage. The only damage shaving foam might do is to the lawn.
