They're still working on it by the looks of things. I had a peek in there last week. They seem to be furnishing the walls with wooden paneling. It looks a lot brighter than before!

I used to work in a wetherspoons. Do you know their policy is to buy up all the unsold stocks of major brewers that are about to go out of date and sell them on to the customer? I've seen beer that should have been chucked out go into pint glasses for the unsuspecting punters. Plus it was a fairly busy place so nobody ever used to clean the lines, a fairly disgusting and cut-price affair, and they pay their employees next to nothing. Could turn into ned central (if StA had any real neds)

It's not going to be a Wetherspoons. Christ forbid they ever get a foot in the door here. Although Belhaven have tried their very best to make Drouthy Neebors into one, the food all seems to be shipped in, they have drinks offers, even the menu cards on the tables are identical to Wetherspoons.

The Gin House has been bought by Maclay Inns, who own the West Port and Victoria Café, so if anything it'll be similar to those. You know, like half the other pubs in St Andrews nowadays.

Fair enough. Westport is a rip-off and Victoria Cafe isn't the dark, grimy kind of pub I like best, so in my eyes it'll be exactly like the old gin house, a place to avoid.

Yes. In CAMRA circles, this is well known. However, conversely, I've never had a pint that's been over-vented or badly kept at a Wetherspoon's. This is because, I've generally found, that JDW can shift a lot of a local brew at their local outlet (minimal beer miles, a policy endorsed by CAMRA), thus something with a week left (that's their standard measure) can go within a day, because they sell it so cheaply.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have a pint of well kept beer from an unusual brewery in pastures afar, but in the other sense, I don't want brews to go to waste, especially from my local brewer, that'd be a shame indeed.

So yes, JDW may be the spawn of Satan, but they keep many local craft brewers in a job, due to their spindle system of distribution - something I wholly endorse.

Speaking of disgusting pubs, look no further than your union. Mould in the coke fountains, lines never getting cleaned and an ant infestation to name but a few things.

The Vic has been bought by G1. It will be closing soon for a refurbishment and it is going upmarket.

The Gin House has indeed been bought by maclays and is due to open around easter after a major refurbishment.

As said the Gin House was aquired by Maclay Inns three months past and is due to be re launched on the 31st of this month under the new name "The Rule". A huge opening night is planned with D.J's from the soul cellar creating the music.An entirely new look is to be found inside with a traditional and contemporary feel (anybody remember Ogstons?) exposed wooden beams and a new conservatory area and extensive beer garden to the rear.All in all a very exciting prospect for 2008.

and we were told today they are still thinking up some new offers so there may be more later.
Prices are pretty reasonable and the interior is much better than the old Gin house, lots of wood and lighting and it had a very warm and bright friendly feel about it, I'll have the full tour on Tuesday so will know more then but from what I seen today it looks nice, much better than the old Gin House at least.
Opening night is scheduled for 31st (purposely over the break so it will be quiet to start with while any problems are sorted) then they are planing some sort of a big opening party probably shortly after spring break, it will be heavily advertised and more information about the opening night will be advertised next week so look out for it.

I'll look forward to seeing what they do to this place, or at least hope someone has some photos or reports of it. When I was in first year I think it was in its infancy as the Gin House and had just changed from being Ogstons a few weeks previously. It was, however, a bit of a "place to be" during those first couple of years, with the U2 Tuesday promo with free Baileys and Guinness. I loved those days. Shame that in the last couple of years it became a bit of a dive with hardly anyone but some scary looking locals propping up the bar.
