The Royal Mint has unveiled the first new designs for Britain's coins since decimalisation nearly 40 years ago. The Mint commissioned new "reverse" designs for the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins that feature the shield of the royal arms to partner the Queen's head on the flip side. Here's a first look at the changes to your change.

Ooh I like those, a lot. About time we had something striking on the 'normal' coins rather than having a constantly-changing £2.

Constantly changing?
I didn't think the £2 had changed at all since it was introduced 11 years ago.

the main design hasn't, but they have been bringing out special edition ones every now and again - like one for the 1999 rugby world cup.

50p coins always have different things on them.

I miss the big chunky 50p coins...

Haha, you're showing your age there! Actually, I can't talk because I remember using the 1/2p to buy sweets as a kid!

When did the 5p and 10p change? I preferred the old 5ps as I always seem to lose the tiny new ones somewhere in my bag.

I still have them because I was sad to see them go!

These new coins are ridiculous though. It's clever that the coins make up a shield but you're never going to see them like that, practically speaking. Unless you empty your pockets and make a nice little arrangement at the till no one is going to appreciate the design surely?

I'll rejudge them again when I see them in my hand, but from the looks of things: I quite like them.

Can't help but see the blatant 'Wayhey Union!' effort on Gordon Brown's (notice the initials: GB, like Great Britain...I hadn't noticed that before!) part, but anyway. That's really neither here nor there.

Errr.... where the hell are the numbers on these coins??

How are tourists supposed to know how much each coin is worth? I'm sure other people need the numbering system??

They have letters instead. Is it that much of a problem? There's a greater level of foreigners who speak English than there is Britons who speak foreign languages, so I think the majority of them will get by.

To be fair, the majority of the current £1 and £2 designs only have letters on them, too.

And why did we get rid of all the nicknames for various coins/amounts?

For a second there I thought you'd said when.

On another note, since coins are about to fall out of circulation it may be fun or prudent to re-value our currency, and shift back to LSD at the dame time, making a new farthing equivalent to today's 10p (because no-one uses less than that really) making a new pound £96 in today's money, and leaving the shilling at around a fiver. Confusion easily avoided by making the change when Charles becomes King, and the monarch's picture changes.
