Imagine cycling to Adelaide

Postby Admin on Mon May 05, 2008 11:01 pm

Shortly after 8pm this evening, a cyclist knocked on our door, and asked if he could pitch his tent in the garden.

We obliged, and over a cup of tea, he told us that he's cycling from Aberdeen to Adelaide, partly for the experience, and partly to raise money for the M.E. Association.
It's not a race, nor a test of endurance, and at 50 miles a day, 5 days a week, it'll take around 18-24 months, but as he's only on day two and has already raised £3276 of his £12k target, he's well on his way.

Eric's a pleasant chap, and has a very laid back approach to the journey ahead, though perhaps this will change after several thousand miles!

If you fancy chucking a couple of quid his way, he's got a page at http://www.justgiving.com/ericsmart

Or if you know anyone with a garden or campsite anywhere between here and Adelaide (via France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Australia), send an email to admin@thesinner.net and I'll pass your details on to Eric.

I'm planning to walk 78 miles this July, which at the moment seems pretty daunting to me, but nothing compared to the trip from Aberdeen to Adelaide!

Good luck Eric- thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your journey!

When you think about it, you've got to admit that it takes some balls to do something like that. I imagine they'll be very sore after 2 years of cycling. It'll be interesting to see whether or not he makes it. Good luck to the man!

...then again, that is only my opinion.

I adore quirky stuff like that, I wish he'd knock at my door. I don't have a garden but still...

Also looking at the pic I thought there was a cat emanating from his front wheel.

Oh. if he's going anywhere near Carcasonne he could stop off at my parents place. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. What route is he taking?

I'm not sure if he'll be going that far South West in France, but if you email me with your details, I'll pass them on and you can let him know he has a place to stay in Carcasonne!

He's on his way to Burntisland today!

Check out this recent St Andrews grad doing a similar thing from Delhi to Dublin, raising money for WaterAid.

An update

Postby Oli on Thu Jun 12, 2008 8:33 pm

As promised, Eric has given us an update on his progress, and you can read it here: http://www.thesinner.net/article/8290

Eric provides an interesting and entertaining account of his journey so far, and although it's quite a lengthy piece, it's a good read

[s]In July of this year I shall be walking 78 miles in 6 days in aid of the Joseph Salmon Trust, a charity founded by my friends in memorial to their son Joseph who died aged 3 in April of 2005. Please look at the link below for further details and consider sponsoring me. Thank you.

Kieran's such a legend! He was cycling through Pakistan during the fallout after Benazir Bhutto's assassination... I don't envy him, especially on a bike! He's somewhere in former Yugoslavia at the moment I think.

Hey Oli
Is he planning to come through the South of France at all? If so I'll send you my number to forward to him and he can crash at ours for a night or so
