Why does the sinner hate Firefox?

Postby Duggeh on Sat May 10, 2008 9:47 pm

Really though, the massively laggy scrolling which makes any other program running stutter alongside. Why? IE does fine. I don't like it that IE does something better than Firefox.

Before some Mac zealot jumps down my neck I am not going to install Opera.

I just want to know, if Sinner bullet time scrolling can be cured somehow, aside from actually updating the site to some professional, non-homebrew code.

Hate to break it to you, but Firefox on the mac has always sucked.

The betas for version 3.0 are very promising (read: MUCH faster), but are still a bit buggy.

I'm not on a mac, seeing as you couldn't spot that from the tone of the post. I'm on XP with firefox 3 beta 5.

Then why would a mac zealot want you to switch to Opera, seeing as it's also readily available for the PC, and is much more popular on that platform? I don't use it either, but your argument doesn't make terribly much sense.

From a quick glance, the sinner's code seems *decently* good, and there are many professional sites that are much, much, much worse. At that, it sounds like your problem lies with Firefox, and not The Sinner. The underlying HTML shouldn't do terribly much to affect scrolling, unless it's extremely bloated, there's some sort of weird Javascript running in the background, or you've got a slow computer.

Remember that Beta software is very likely to have bugs. Try disabling any extensions you have installed, emptying your caches, and check to see if the problem exists in a non-beta version of firefox.

Also make sure you've got enough ram, and that some background program isn't making your computer idle at 100% CPU usage.

Two other things to try (collected from Google):

1) Disable smooth scrolling in the Firefox preferences
2) Update your computer's graphics driver. (Sounds scary, but is fairly easy and straightforward)

Sounds like this is a problem lots of people are having with a seemingly random array of sites.

Perhaps Oli might be able to clear this up. Could it be because the whole site is being displayed as an overlay? You know what I mean that the green background stays still yet the rest of the pages moves as you scroll.

I mean the crazy picture background here, not just the sold green colour in the tables

I'm sure its all done with CSS. Might be worth a fiddle or it could be an excuse for Oli to release the joomla version of the sinner to all!

I've never had any problems viewing the sinner in firefox (1 and 2) under Windows XP, Mac OS X, or Scientific Linux.

Using some form of ad blocking extension to block the background image http://www.thesinner.net/graphics/green/bg.jpg will speed up scrolling.

I haven't noticed any problems using the Sinner with Firefox under XP. In fact, the Sinner actually prefers Firefox to IE. Firefox lets you select text and change the style of it by clicking the B/ I /U buttons up there by Image/Link/Show Help. IE doesn't like automatically editing text around a selection.

Weird.

Is there any technical reason why we use a *huge* jpg as the background? Either a small tiled image, a PNG, or a solid color would seem to make a lot more sense.

That background image is a bit annoying - it always makes me think I have smudges on my monitor. :P

I've always used Firefox for The Sinner, for around 3 years and have had no problems whatsoever
