No love for Colombo? :(

If Jack Bauer was put in a room with Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Nina Myers and handed a gun with two bullets, he'd shoot Nina twice.

I dislike Christie's books, so I'm going with Holmes.

What do you mean by best?

Do you mean who is the best bloke or who is the most effective detective?

Quincy was pretty good too, but not technically a detective.

Was Jessica Fletcher (Murder She Wrote) a detective of sorts?

Or Hetty Wainthrop...

Good god, I'm getting far too excited with all this crime malarchy - must be time to revise.

Good grief, I feel I must abstain from voting on this one. Voting for any of them would make me feel Id betrayed the others! They all have such different styles I think its impossible to pick. What happened to Maigret? That man is a true detective, he doesnt actually really DO anything and the books are so well written its actually pretty irrelevant who committed the crime.

House M.D.

(and yes I may be mentioning him because he's a hot bastard but he's also a detective of illnesses)

Well, it seems that the plucky little Belgian has it. A little disappointing I have to say.

That does not strike me as such a constructive comment, perhaps you would like to elaborate?

I can see where Fawksie is coming from. He is rather self satisfied and arrogant which does not render him prepossessing. Plus he is little.

Precisely this. I've never liked the character. His poncy moustache doesn't help.

Indeed, Poirot is, a bit of an arsehole. If it wasn't for the fact he was also a fairly clever chappie, he'd probably be a whole lot less famous and a whole lot more of a deadbeat.

Still, I find it quite delicious reading, y'know, him being a pratt to essentially everyone except the beautiful society-ladies. He's hardly likeable as a character, but it's still a good premiss. I enjoy reading of him.

Anyhow, where's Jack Frost? I'm more fond of Morse, but I enjoy most of them. Except Miss Marple, never really liked her.

Also, some years later:
"here we are arguing about a few uppity troublemakers with a bee in their bonnet and a conspiracy theory."

I notice MJC that you put 'fictional' in the original post in inverted commas. Was this because you think there's a chance that they might exist in the real world?
