Songs that have you near/in tears

Not as in god-awful songs! But songs that have personally significant lyrics or emotive instrumentation or whatever it is something which makes you just well up.

I really can't explain it but the following songs just bring a lump to my throat and make me blink a lot and I get a wave of emotion that often comes out as a disguised laugh. Yeah it's hard to explain

A little neo-classical violin and harp piece called Ashokan's Farewell. Fellow Americans may recognise it as the theme music to PBS's classic miniseries documentary on the US Civil War. If not from that you've probably heard is elsewhere. It's one of those numbers that everyone seems to recognise but no one knows the name of.

If you aren't American, you've probably never heard it, but I strongly recommend it. It is, in my opinion, the most bittersweet music. Ever.

Tsk. The series has run on BBC2 on at least two occasions, it is, unquestionably, the finest historical documentary ever made - and I love Ashokan Farewell, though I am far more used to hearing it on violin and guitar, or two violins than on violin and harp. The version with Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife, is impossible not to be moved by.
