whats the timetable like?

Postby Laura on Thu Mar 27, 2003 1:11 am

hi,
I've been accepted at St Andrews to read Psychology next year, and fair enough if im doing a Psychology degree then i would expect to have an hour of contact time a day for psychology, but not for geography and my other subject (as yet undecided) too!! Is the timetable really that hectic, and are you really expected to read 50 pages of the textbook BEFORE the next lecture (for each subject)? if so how on earth do you do it, and still manage to socialise too?
Oh and whats the town like for socialising? I've been up to visit but didnt really get a chance to see what went on in the evenings....

The amount of work that schools prescribe is about 10 times what they think is necessary because they know the average student will do about a 10th of the average work.

Wong can tell you about a hectic schedule with his 18 hours of practicals every day.

It's not that bad! You'll have 3-4 hours of lectures/classes a day, maybe a few more if you have a practical (a couple hours lab work) you don't have to read the textbooks before the lecture, that reading is udually just for extra reference, read it after the lecture if you didn't get something, or if you study best like that. You'll be done by 5 or 6 pm, you may have a morning or afternoon off, heck, I have a whole day off on wednesday (and i still can't get the essay done- natch)

As the Prophet said (and I knew he was going to say that), I'm a first year with an impressive number of hours per week - 24 at last count. I take two Chemistry modules and one Computing.

Those are made up of:
13 hours of lectures (though a few people never go to them, print out the web notes and pass easily that way)
9 hours of practicals - six hours of Chemistry and three hours of Computing, though these often take a shorter amount of time than expected
2 hours of tutorials, which have to be prepared for beforehand (and when I say "have to be prepared for" I mean "avoid doing any preparation for and bluff my way through").

This is what I get for taking three Sciences, though - if you're doing Arts then the timetable is a lot less crowded, apparently. And none of the lectures are strictly compulsory.

I am a first year with 9 hours a week -
3 tutorials
6 lectures.

Wicked!

[hr]'I said I'd enjoyed talking to them a lot, too. I meant it, too. I'd have enjoyed it even more though, I think, if I hadn't been sort of afraid, the whole time I was talking to them, that they'd all of a sudden try to find out if I was a Catholic.'

All psychology lecture notes are on the internet, so you never have to go to a lecture. As for the practical/statistics class, there may be a very small amount of reading to do for it, but it's hardly anything.

Second year, it doesn't get much harder, the notes are still on the web, the practical/statistics class are still easy, and the fortnightly tutorials are VOLUNTARY. Don't go to them, they even give you voluntary essays. Such a joke.

[hr]If I gave a shit, you'd be the first person I'd give it to.

it's very easy to say "i'll get them off the internet" but from my experience, getting to the lectures still helps, even if you do fall asleep in them. subconcious learning, it works too!

So where were you yesterday, the day before etc...

p.s. did you pick up notes for me today?

but i agree having slept through loads of lectures, subconcious learning is very impressive.

thank u guys :) ok so as long as ur not a really conscientious workaholic then it sounds ok :)
Is it true that the psychology exams are multiple choice? (no wonder ur freind passed by only going to 3 lectures...)
I think i have managed to narrow my application for accommodation down so that i will b in either University Hall or Melville, (by saying that i want standard, catered, large hall and getting a doctors note saying that i cannot b in a 'smoking' hall). do you think that its likley that i'll get placed in one of these halls or are they likely to stick me in a random one?

I'd like to give you an answer to that question, but sadly it is beyond the capacity of most mere mortals to understand how the minds of accomodation services work.

Are there really such things as smoking and non-smoking halls these days?
