Graduation Day dress

Do people tend to change clothes after the graduation ceremony for lunch and the garden party? Also, how long do you get the graduation gown for?

Nope, most people stay in gowns and hoods during the garden party. You might feel a bit less special or out of place if you changed and everyone around you was still in gowns! Plus, they would think you were a guest, and not a graduate.
Don't you want the chance to prance around in a gown for the whole day? Milk it!
I think you have to return the gown at the end of the day but I'm not sure. Or even the morning before the next ceremony.

Last year, you had to return the gown after the garden party (around 5pm)

Girls,

Skirt or trousers? Shirt tucked or untucked? What type of shoes are you wearing, flats or heels?

I did skirt but it doesn't matter. I did heels. But you can do either.I had shirt untucked, I think! Enjoy it- mine was the happiest day of my life :-)

I had a high waisted belted skirt so my blouse was tucked in. I wore heals so walking on the grass after a week of rain wasn't easy, but at least my gown didn't drag along the ground!

Just wear something you feel comfortable in but still look smart. I saw some dumb yah wearing shiny lycra leggings last year... Not a good look!

I have a long-sleeved shirt tucked into a high-wasted skirt. I kind of look like I'm going to choir practice! But I was out of time to find stuff. Oh well:)

Or somewhere in between? I'm going for pretty but with a smallish heel - I have no intention of making a fool of myself in high heels and falling over in front of everyone.

Oh and skirt with short-sleeved shirt untucked ...there seems to be a real lack of shirts in the shops that can be tucked in properly without coming out whenever you sit down...

Not being a wearer of heels, I can't really comment, but I'd advise going for flat simply because I've seen so many people stumble. You'd be astonished how many people forget how to walk in those few, exposed yards across the stage.

Will a standard 2 piece suit do? I cannot be bothered going to Edinburgh to get a new suit.

More than acceptable. But absolutely not a dinner jacket, it's not an American wedding.

If a dinner jacket is the only dark jacket you own, it's perfectly acceptable. Noone can tell underneath the gown.

I bet exnihilo could tell.

I certainly could, as could anyone else, because the buttons and the lapels will be visible. As, might well, the stripes on the trousers.

I wore black trousers, blouse untucked, and heels....I didn't trip over on stage (Thank the Lord...) But I did see a ceremony where a guy tripped over and he wasn't wearing heels so I think some people just generally lose their ability to take 10 steps on stage.

I'm going to echo what someone else said about not changing for the garden party. Everyone wore their gowns and it was nice to walk around with it on....you paid to hire the gown so you might as well get as much use out of it.

Good Luck and Congratualtions to everyone graduating. Welcome to the real world.

It's also good for those moments when your supervisor notices you and wants a few photos with you and your immediate group of friends. Capitalise and get photos done with the significant others. It also means you get a free address book - £48 well spent.
