I think they switched it on yesterday. But I don't think they did any particle smashing. They might be in late October.

To be honest, if the world does end, I can help think everything being turned into a giant lump of strange matter would be a heck of a lot cooler that simple nuclear armageddon.

International aid is a thing of such monolithic proportions that simply channelling funding from scientific research into even more aid for whatever country/group/charity would not necessarily benefit more people. Besides which, there are certain pressing matters on this planet which can only hope to be solved through scientific research.

Its fucking science, ok? Its an end in itself. You do enough of it and eventually something good will come of it. Its not mutually exclusive with feeding starving black AIDS babies.

plus the applications of discoveries found should, in time justify the money spent here. Take the space program for instance - lots of offshoots which we wouldnt live without today.

What bugs me was the amount of people thinking the world was going to end. I think this in the grand scheme of Fusion, Quantum, and a million others is a very boring not very risky experiment. But in a 100 years when we're say mining the asteroid belt. This will be the boring step that gave us a step towards anti matter to matter propulsion. It's only because the press told people who have no idea what the fuck anyones on about that we're building something big that they actually tried to petition for it to not get turned on.

Heck I like religion though I may be far from it myself. But I hate it when people allow it to get in the way of thinking. I'll understand why the muttering masses will be against things like abortion and human cloning. But I don't think I read anywhere in the bible that says "thou shall not smash particles together."

The cost argument i can understand, but there's millions of experiments that cost a lot and don't get us anywhere. Like the moon landing. Relatively this doesn't cost much more, but this will give us something in the long run besides an awesome quote and a few conspiracy theorists
