Firefox 3

Has anyone else tried Firefox 3? What do you think of it?

For me, it's made all websites look different (the font size has changed), and I really don't like the way it suggests pages to you as you type into the address bar.

Doesn't seem like a step forward to me.

It doesn't leak memory as badly as Firefox 2, which is the main reason I like it. I'm still not a huge fan of the "awesome bar", as they call it, and indeed I half-disabled it so it's a bit more like it was in Firefox 2, but it's apparently not possible to disable it entirely. Particularly for web sites I visit frequently, I find it a lot quicker to press Alt-D, n, down, for "BBC News", for instance, whereas often if I press "n" now, it'll come up with some random web site with an "n" in its page title, which isn't what I want.

Firefox is my browser of choice having sampled them all. Version 3 took some getting used to but it's fine.

The bar suggests sites in your recent history and your bookmarks. But why you need a shortcut to a shortcut I don't know :S

The bookmark system now has pointless tags which I don't use and I can't sort by alphabet any more >:(

How do you semi-disable it? Sounds like what I'm after.

In the meantime, I've reverted to FF2.

Well I like it. Yes, the address bar took some getting used to. But due to the amount of stuff I deal with at a time, the memory leaks on v2 were a complete nightmare - I downloaded v3 beta as soon as it came out, and I've never looked back!

...then again, that is only my opinion.

is anyone else sometimes getting it opening in safe mode? Ive tried everything to stop it, or get it back to normal mode but it still sometimes opens with the basic interface :S

Bookmarks -> Organise bookmarks -> Sort by name.

FF3's bar is less annoying if you don't keep a history of visited pages (you can set it to clear your private data each time you close the browser -- this includes browsing history, downloads, cookies (with exceptions) and login data).

To be honest though, Firefox is only awesome because of the amazing add-ons that people create for it.

If you type about:config into the address bar, and locate "browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped" and set it to "1", and restart, then it should just look at previous URLs you've visited, rather than your history/bookmarks.

Been using Firefox 3 since beta 3. there do seem to be a few graphics glitches, but overall, I think it's an improvement (which is good, since my Linux distro only has Firefox 3 now anyway)
Personally, I'm fond of the 'awesome bar' but that's just my opinion
The above is my opinion and understanding and as such carries no guarantee to its accuracy

To go back to FF2 style search results in the bar, install the 'oldbar' extension from the Add-ons menu. To stop it indexing bookmarks, install 'Hide Unvisited'. Did the trick for me. It may not be exactly the way it once was, but I actually can't remember how it used to be now.

Give the 'Awesome Bar' a chance. It becomes immensely useful later on as you use it.

Iceweasel

Postby sat on Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:04 am

I've just installed Debian on my laptop, and they insist on calling it Iceweasel. It's a bit of a change for me since my Ubuntu PC is still using version 1.5 (which is working fine for me).

It's because the debian builds usually have other mods done to them and the mozilla foundation won't allow them to brand it as firefox.

To get around this and still allow it to be bundled in with debian the name is changed.

Not quite sure what these other mods are, but i'm sure you could find out.

Yes: there seem to be a few arguments for and against doing this. I don't mind too much but some are suggesting that it's not good to keep splitting off into breakaway projects, despite the freedom gained in doing so.
