A bit of history

Postby Jennifer Loves Chewitts on Wed Feb 11, 2009 12:08 pm

Seeing as the pubs' names change so frequently in St Andrews, I wonder if anyone could tell me the name(s) of One Golf Place before it took on its current identity? I remember hearing about McSorleys and the Niblick or something - were there any others?

And what of other pubs in town? Ogstons used to be on South Street?

One Golf Place was indeed McSorley's and was the Niblick before that as you say, that takes you back to at least 1990. What was the Gin House was Ogston's before that and O'Henry's before that, taking you back to roughly the same date.

Mackays > Howies > Broons

Raisin > ...?... > The Feathered Firkin

The Rule > The Gin House

Criterion > Lafferty's Irish Pub

One of the venues in the union used to be called Cloud 9, but I can't remember which.

Venue 2 used to be Cloud 9, and before that, it was the Fraser Suite. Venue 1 has at times been the "Debating Hall" and the "Union Theatre". Also, I believe this year the Salad Bowl has supposedly been renamed, officially-speaking at least, but I can't quite remember what to.

The Salad Bowl was renamed the 'Dover Suite' by last year's SSC. This year's SSC chose to revert the name change because no-one took any notice of it.

Venue 2 was cloud 9 and I think should be called the Attic.

Almost - Kate's preceded the Firkin. The dismal Four Woods preceded Mackays or whatever it was called.

I used to love the Four Woods. Over priced, wobbly pool table, always empty. Almost as good as the Castle.

Make it a square - the Criterion was Bert's Bar before it was Lafferty's

The Criterion became Bert's Bar before it changed to Lafferty's.

I still hear reference to the Fraser Suite sometimes in the bar, I always wondered where they meant!

And a certain long-haired barman confused me last night by asking me to take something through to "the theatre". It took a few seconds of confused silence before he explained himself.

And let's not forget that the Seafood Restaurant was once Crumbs Pavilion Tearoom.
