Now that I've pretty much stopped drinking (forget that I have occasionally, ;)) St Andrews seems pretty boring. What do people do here when they are not getting drunk? I can't do any more physical stuff because I already exhaust myself in that respect every week. Come the weekend, all I can find to do is watch DVDs and read a book! I like to travel around a bit, and I get a lot of things to do outside of St Andrews, but when I'm here on a Saturday night all I can think of doing is going to the pub!

What does everyone else do?

probably they do some work :(

I thought saturday was house party night? It does seem that the whole culture in the UK revolves around drinking. Other things people suggest sometimes come off as pretentious :( Thing is if you dont go out to the pub there really isnt a good way to meet people.

Tea party.

Well, okay, that's hardly 'not drinking', but at least it's not alcohol. And by 'tea party', I mean: grab a friend, neighbour or even distant acquaintance and make it mandatory to meet up regularly (even if only once every month, good if you've four different friends and can get them on rotation...) for a cuppa, a coffee or some such thing. Having folks round for a cuppa, a chat and basically a doss-around is damn fine fun.

If you're at all familiar with DS9: find a Garak to your Bashir. Have lunch!

Okay, that's not exactly solving the Saturday night problem either. But, really, in terms of 'stuff to do', it does amount to socialise, work, read, exercise or watch TV. Taking up a hobby is a good way to disappear evenings. If you're of the persuasion: Warhammer or something like that!

Tea parties can be fantastic indeed! The equivalent for a Saturday night could be board games party - get out your copies of Monopoly, Taboo, Apples to Apples, Cranium or even just a deck of cards and get some friends over. Make it a pot-luck dinner, or just get people to bring home-made nibbles for while you are playing. If you have a wii, that could work as well, but really, it's the realisation that old-fashion board games can indeed be quite good fun that makes such an evening interesting!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Most people fill the gap between drinking and sleeping with employment. If you're that energetic and you don't have anything to do, try that. Otherwise try a musical instrument, evening language course, theatre, self improvement man! If you're not going to piss your life away on booze there are plenty of sober people/recovering alcoholics in this town. You could even join the left soc or the CU if you want to pass your time ignoring facts and accepting doctrine. I hear it's quite effective.

You could try taking drugs?

I reckon left soc drink a lot more while ignoring facts, while the CU resurrect children's party games. I have a pretty good bank of them now. Most are like the more complicated sort of drinking game, but without the drinking.

Alternatively, buy an Xbox.

What a great idea! Although finding that person will be difficult.
