I remember seeing on tv once about freak acts who would regularly impale themselves with spears in a similar location. Due to how the organs are positioned it is apparently possible to do this and miss everything of importance. Rotate it 90 degrees though and it would have been a far greater miracle from what I understand of biology. Of course that could all be nonsense since I've never done anatomy of humans :D
