A friend of mine was having problems earlier, so it's quite likely there was/is a problem with the service.

I got sick of webmail and its general unreliability (particularly on speed), so set up a gmail account to extract all my mail to - from there this gets forwarded to my phone, so I now have no need to mess around with webmail other than the occassional search for someone's e-mail address.

Obviously none of this matters if webmail is down, since as it's an extract account, but I no longer get pissed off at not being able to log in.

Fuck, that's exactly what I was thinking of posting here. Not being ironic either...:(

Don't blame webmail for this one: There was a scheduled outage on one of the back-end mail servers last night.

That seems like a fairly good reason to blame webmail. Why do we need scheduled outages?

Webmail is a client. It is not the entire mail system, a unrelated component of which was taken down for scheduled maintenance.

Ooh, bold! Either way, the point remains the same.

Presumably, some kind of maintenance needed to be done on the servers. Just as you should run Windows Update regularly (which insists on then rebooting pretty much every time), servers will need their own updates too, so it's quite possible that was the reason.

In an ideal world, the maintenance would be scheduled for some time that wouldn't inconvenience so many people, such as 3am. However, that then relies on the IT techs working at that time of the morning, which I guess they're not always keen to do.

Surely in an ideal world we'd have some kind of redundancy whereby you could unplug a server and the whole system would continue to function as normal? Nothing new or expensive in suggesting this.

It's working for me now, too. I sort of figured that when I complained about it, it would start working again.
