I've eaten at most places in town, and enjoyed the steak on the menu at the Doll's house and the Grill House.

However, i would thoroughly recommend booking somewhere out of town for graduation if you can, as it will be far more value for money and there are some real treats to be had. Try Harvey Mcguires or alternatively the Peat Inn (great veal there) for fantastic meals.

Bored much, Hennessey?

Anyway, on the subject of steak, I've just had some that I bought from Morrisons - and it wasn't great. I was looking forward to it as an 'end of exams' treat as well.

I realise things may very well have changed in the four years since I was last dining in St Andrews, but in my time there the best steak to be had was at the Byre - best steak I've ever had, in fact. Of course, I've had steak there more than once, and it was only the one time that it was phenomenally excellent, but the other times were quite good, too.

Probably not as bad as the stuff I had from Tesco the other week. To be fair, the stuff I had *was* very cheap, so I was kind of getting what I paid for, and hey, it was edible.

Best steak that I think I've ever had was in a restaurant in California. Which is obviously not very much use for this thread. In St Andrews, I've had some nice steak in the Grill House, but I imagine there may be other places that are better... I just haven't had a chance to try!

The steak from supermarkets is not as tasty as that from Bridges on South St.
For the simple reason that it hasn't been dead quite as long. That, and the supermarket meat isn't hung whole; it's butchered, vacuum packed and then kept for the minimum 21 days.

Buy from the butcher's - it does cost more, but it tastes even better!

Oh, I do agree - there's a very nice butchers where my Grandad lives, and the meat there does tend to be much nicer than the supermarket meat. Steak is something I very rarely have in St Andrews, maybe I will try the butchers and see what it's like.

Drouthies used to have "the monster" on their menu. 16 oz rump for £4. Brilliant.

Ziggy's used to do something quite similar - and they certainly used to have good steaks... not been there for a while now.
...then again, that is only my opinion.
