Edinburgh wanted to know what my objectives for my proposed PhD were. 'To finish' came to mind. Some of these forced questions are a lot weirder than if they just left you to your own devices and the instruction to fill an A4 page with something a bit vaguer than your actual research proposal.

I have a similar problem with my application for American funding. When they want to know why I chose to go to a non-US school, I couldn't just say "They let me in and didn't make me cry like the programs in the US, so it was a lot easier." For some reason I didn't think they'd think that was an acceptable reason...

The application form this year for the clinical psychology doctoral courses included the question: What do you hope to gain from training?
The temptation to put 'a doctorate in clinical psychology would be nice' was hard to resist, but I succeeded :)

My auditor application asked: describe a difficult and unpopular decision you've made and what you learned from it

I finally had to put down a hideous week in Cumbria, in which my team seemed to self-destruct, and I made the decision to 'do it myself'. Passed the initial rounds anyway!
