I'd like to go someway to dispell this 'St Andrews is so boring' myth.
I've had the wildest, surreal and most drunken nights out in St Andrews, as opposed to conventionally 'wild' cities such as London and Manchester. Even if Scotty is trolling, both Delts' and stripedtights' replies do a disservice to the town and promote an unfriendly, and boorish attitude.
It's just a different culture of partying, of nights out. Scotty, you are coming at a particularly quiet time of year, when there're no big events such as Balls/ Fashion Shows/ Ceiledhs (all of which St Andrews excels at) but you can easily have a great night over the summer. Try having a few drinks outside in the sunshine of the Central, a very boozy supper at one of the many excellent restaurants, then go to the Westport, Number 40, or any of the hotel bars such as Chariots/ Russel for lots of cocktails.
After the bars shut is usually when the night really kicks off. Finding a random house party to crash will be more difficult if you're not a student, but if that's not an option there's still lots of very silly ways to carry on your night. Grab a botttle of whisky (important note: booze is not available after 10pm, so stock up before supper/after Central) and head to the Castle, or go down to East Sands for a spot of night swimming, or head to West Sands (via Old Course streaking) for some late-night beach games and (legal) outside drinking.
I welcome all the negative responses this is sure to evoke, but I'm just saying: stop hating; nights out in St Andrews can be incredible, fun, and memorable. You just have to look for it .
