I could write a bit about postgrad life if you want although it would be good to have some input from others, especially doing Sciences or doing 1 year courses.

Some topics I'll try and write about are follows:

Social life,
Places to live,
Work and funding ideas,
Library/ computing/ academic stuff

If any prospective postgrads have any general questions then I'll try and think of some answers.

Yes! Postgrad Questions you can answer:

Guided, here are a few. First, how does a person find accommodation for a family (in this case, Mom and two little girls, both school age). And how do I get them into the local schools? How can I find ways to meet up with other parents who've brought their children?

On a more scholarly note, have you any experience with US universities, and if so, can you draw some comparisons in the postgrad programs?

I'd love to know how coursework is structured and what preps might be advantageous.

Not sure I can answer all of these easily but I'll do what I can.

Probably the best way would be to look at the websites that most of the local estate agents have e.g.:

http://www.md-c.co.uk/property/houses/proptorent.htm

http://www.evebrown.co.uk/

http://www.paganproperty.co.uk/

They will have houses to rent in the St Andrews area. You might consider areas outside the town itself as these can often be better value (and sometimes in very nice places e.g. Crail, Anstruther).

And how do I get them into the local schools?

I'm not too sure about this but Fife Council would probably be the people to speak to. Not sure how much you can get from their website but here it is anyway:

http://www.fife.gov.uk/

How can I find ways to meet up with other parents who've brought their children?

I'm trying to think if I know any but I can't remember at the moment. It might also be worth contacting staff who have come from overseas with children. Maybe ask your prospective department if there is anyone in that situation. I think there is a mature students society at the university who might be able to give advice. There's also student support services:

http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/services/ss ... index.html

They should be helpful.

On a more scholarly note, have you any experience with US universities, and if so, can you draw some comparisons in the postgrad programs?I'd love to know how coursework is structured and what preps might be advantageous.

I had some experience as an undergrad but not as a postgrad. I think there are some big differences but the Scottish system is probably more similar to the US than the English system. I know people who've come over to do my subject from North America and they say that the subject itself is pretty different over here so it's almost like starting from scratch. You'll probably find that the position of the staff is different in that they have to do a lot other than teach and do research. They are all laden with admin so can be quite busy. As to coursework, it used to be that postgrads would go to honours undergrad classes mostly but this seems to be less in favour now with more specialist postgrad classes. Departments are often very keen to fit in their schedules with the demands of the funding bodies and I think this change is partly a reflection of that. Most departments have some sort of regular academic event e.g. a weekly seminar. Postgrads are usually expected to come along to these. There's usually a strong social element to them as well. I know my department runs weekly seminars for postgrads (one for MRes and one for PhDs) where people present and discuss their work.

Sorry if this is only of limited help. I'll try and find out a few more things and will post them up here. Good luck.

Thanks very much for that - do you think you could put all that info (together with other stuff) into an article that could be put on the Sinner's Guide to St Andrews?

If so, please email it to me (plain text) and I'll upload it. oli@ thesinner.co.uk

Wow Guided by Vices, that was a great start for me! I will be checking everything out. What department are you in? I can't remember what you've posted before, and whether you are working on your masters or PhD.

Thanks again for the information.

Would someone write an article to help people through the Pre-Sesh week?

Please include details of:
[l]
[li]What to do when you first arrive in hall (or Britain, if they're from overseas),
[li]The first night - where to go?
[li]Activities in Pre-sesh week
[li]What to look out for throughout the week
[li]Thinking about advising... What does it mean?
[li]MATRICULATION!!
[li]Post-pre-sesh. Work? Lectures?
[/l]

Let me know here if you can write such an article. Cheers!

Advising isn't much to write about now - Last year, I changed degree and it took about 3 minutes.

If only they had made such advances in the field of matriculation...

Deej, I don't know if you've checked this already but Accommodation Services do have some flats that are supposed to be for couples. It says they only have a few though, so possibly there's a waiting list. Check their site:

http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/services/re ... comm.shtml

I think these flats are down by the cathedral and if it's the ones I'm thinking of they're not that huge. Might do for a short time though.

By the way, I'm a PhD student (probably finishing soon) in an 'Arts subject' (enigmatic, I'm afraid).

Medical School

Postby diana on Thu Jun 05, 2003 9:33 am

Ahoy from overseas! I am a Canadian high school student looking for information on St.Andrews' medical program. I am already familiar with the official info the university gives out, so I was hoping one of you (you don't need to be in medicine) could tell me how the students regard it. I'm currently trying to decide between attending St.Andrews or King's College London. Do any of you from Britain know how their reputations match up? Thanks for any help you can give me...

I will write an article about the St Andrews medical programme for the Sinners' Guide. I don't know that much about the GKT medical degree specifically, so I can't really compare them that well, but the main differences between St Andrews and elsewhere generally that I can think of off the top of my head are:
[l]
[li] Completely separate clinical and pre-clinical programme at St Andrews, with virtually no patient contact whatsoever in the first 3 years.
[li] It takes 6 years to do the full medical degree at St Andrews as oppose to 5 years elsewhere.
[li] There is a full anatomy course with dissection, whereas I believe some other courses have gone over to computer reconstructions and less emphasis on anatomy.
[li] Small class - only about 120 students in each year, which is smaller than most other medical schools.
[li] A lecture-based course with very little in the way of Problem Based Learning (PBL) during the pre-clinical years.
[li] Subject-based rather than systems-based organisation of teaching.
[/l]
I enjoy the course, but it depends what you're into. If you're main interest is in clinical medicine, then other places are possibly better for this, whereas if you also have an interest in learning about the scientific and biological background to what you learn, then maybe St Andrews offers this.

The course is generally well-regarded. Some people say much of what you learn has little relevance to your future clinical career, which is possibly true. In terms of future jobs, your final MBChB actually comes from Manchester rather than St Andrews, and the Manchester MBChB is thought of as being a good qualification.

Also, take into account the surroundings of the whole university. Although differences in the course are important, also think whether you would prefer to be in a small, historic, quiet, Scottish seaside town, or in the middle of a busy, bustling noisy capital....

Also, along with extensive reorganisation in the Medical School over the last year, with the reintroduction of the Faculty of Medicine and a number of senior staff changes, there is going to be an extensive revision of the curriculum in the next few years, so much of what I've said may change....

To be honest you are comparing Chalk and Cheese - Kings is in a mega big city and St Andrews is a very small scottish sea side town. As for the course no idea! Just remember you can only do three years at St Andrews(pre-clinical) and then you have to go to Manchester to do a further three years. Rumour also has it that St Andrews came 24th out of the 24 (ie. Last!) medical schools in the UK. However, that is what I have heard, I am no expert.........................

Matthew - is that the article, or is that just a rough draft?

If you would like to write a proper article, please email it to me at oli@ thesinner.co.uk

I will be reorganising the Sinner's Guide, making it a lot easier to submit new articles.

No, I am writing a separate more detailed article about the medical course. I'll email it when I've finished.

I think her net access is restricted at home at the moment :( She was moving house.

But I'm sure she would be happy to do it if asked- she is a bopaholic! I think it should be sorted soon enough.

In the meantime, would anybody like to contribute an account of their experiences?
