has anyone here done EN1002?

Postby highway_to_hell1982 on Thu May 29, 2003 4:20 pm

i might be taking this module - EN1002 - next year as a dipdown to make up for lost credits (am going into honours next year), but i am not in the english department, i am from philosophy, so you can say i'll be like an 'outsider' to it. i never did A level English though back at school.

Can anyone (those who have done this course) tell me more about this module and any give tips/opinions based on your experience, like what is the workload like, whats expected in essays, how tutorials are operated, and how easy/hard is it to pass the module? would very much like to hear what those who have done it have to say about it. thanks!

There are easier filler modules.

Well personally I didn't enjoy it much myself. I was supposed to be doing English for honours but EN1001 and 2 made me rethink my decision. My tutor was hopeless and very uninformative.

However this is just my opinion I know people who did enjoy the Tragic Forms module.

As long as you're prepared to do a lot of reading it should be ok.

I study english. I recommend doing something else for a filler. The IT module is probably the biggest joke course I have ever done.

Yup, take IT. It's 20 credits on a plate.

You have to read a book a week, which I never managed and it's my degree, bit scary!! I read 1 play, 1 poem and 1 book but proved that, at this level, sparknotes is a lifesaver. I also only got a 12 and a 13 on my essays, compared to my 16s in both my other (filler) subjects (mor phil and soc anth) - again probably through writing essays on books I haven't read! If you can read fast then it's not a bad course but even if you fall behind it's still passable.

Take Linguistics LI1001/2 - it is all about the study of language - complete piss about - no homework!

and of course you're doing philosophy anyway so you'll have already done it. I wish I would just stop posting.

English is my honours and I have done EN1002. It is more hard work than philosophy, which i do too, but if you like books then I say go for it. You say it's a 'filler', but if you're going to be at uni then why waste your tuition fees on something like IT which is a joke?

I liked the course, though the department is not as flamboyant as maybe it should be for an english department. A lot depends on your tutor too, there are good and bad ones.

what about anthropology? is that a better alternative, since its more closely tied with philosophy? i didn't know IT can be taken in the arts...?

A filler module (ie one that doesn't affect your degree) can be from any faculty. If your looking for something that leaves you with as much time to do your nodules as you would with no extra module, take IT (IS1001).

I started to do EN1002 last year, and had a v. good tutor (Dr Tom Jones), but then I withdrew, because they were expecting me to hand in essays and things.

Tragic Forms

Postby EnglishAddict on Sat May 31, 2003 9:37 pm

Mate, do tragic forms...its fab. One of my favourite English modules to date. you get to do some weird and wonderful Scottish Medieval stuff (Henryson) and I gather the course has been streamlined to include loads of new fab and funky texts. I've never come across anyone who didn't like it!

Good luck.
