Hi I'm thinking of changing my phone and was wondering about the reception of different networks in st andrews. I'm on o2 which is fine, I know Orange is crap, but what about the others? Is anyone on T-mobile? They seem to have the best offers going.

I'm on T-mobile, and it's ok although you can't get a reception in most of the pubs, which can be a problem! I'm going to switch back to Orange though, I got a great reception in St Andrews on orange.

I'm on T-Mobile. It sucks. No reception in any pub or any of the places I am most likely to be (hall, physics building, the union, the pubs). Decidedly ropey signal on streets in town too - depends what side of the street you are on and what the weather is doing.

My T-mobile seemed okay in most places, except for just one house in Gatty for some reason. Library, school of English, union - these places were fine.

O2 is one of the best around for reception in Scotland. It has the best coverage so is more likely to work in more remote areas.

Their deals are very good too, especially if you are more of a texter.

id chose o2 coz 500 free texts a month is hard to beat!
ive had both o2 and orange and have stuck to o2 now as the deals are a lot better and the reception works better if you're further out of town ie up by safeway coz orange only worked every now and again for me up there.

On O2 you can get 500 free texts per month at £15 line rental (I think) or there's good old pay-as-you-go where you pay a minimum of £10 a month for calltime to get 300 free texts a month. The benefit of the latter being that when you don't use your phone as much you can skip payments, yay

The minimum monthly payment is to keep up the free text allowance, has nothing to do with being able to make calls. And like I said you don't have to make the payments if you don't want to - that's why its called....pay-as-you-go.

You only have to put the minimum tenner a month in if you want the 300 free texts. Otherwise you just pay (i think) the 10p for the texts u send. So depending how much you text - a tenner for 300 or 10 p each its ur choice!

Im on Virgin mobile (pretty good value) but not worth it because reception is crap everywhere in St. Andrews (with the exception of East Sands) and the top-up cards arent in as many shops as others. Most people I know say o2 is the best.

No, Foolish Pedant, the deal is(AFAIK):

You have to put a minimum of £10 a month into your o2 phone, and then you receive £10 of call credit, plus 300 free texts. It doesn't actually "cost" £10 for the texts, they just come as a kind of bonus.

And yes, o2 are the best reception in St Andrews and the surrounding areas, with vodafone a close second. The rest are terrible. Vodafone and o2 must share masts, I assume.

Yup and now that it has been explained three times by three different people perhaps you understand. Pay-as-you-go with an optional benefit of 300 free texts - more than most people would ever need.

And yeah, while many companies do share masts O2 and Vodafone seem particularly keen to team up in Scotland. O2 have the best coverage overall but Vodafone is now a close second even in the Highlands.

Why not term it "inclusive" texts, rather than free.

If someone doesn't understand something, it's more likely to be the fault of the person explaining.
