Have I made the correct choice?

Postby seb on Mon Aug 11, 2003 12:30 am

I really shouldn't confess to this! However, I am coming to St Andrews this autumn to read Economics, Modern History and (undecided but probably English, Geography or International Relations - I really dont care).

However, I have little interest in learning or the educational rollercoaster of academic absorption of unstimulating texts.

I will pass university... I have to! It may just take a little more time than is conventional.

However, will St Andrews cater for my extravagent lifestyle? I need nightlife - most nights but does St Andrews, despite being 'rural', offer this?

I now ponder on whether I may have made a bit of a blunder in selecting St Andrews? Perhaps I should have gone to Edinburgh or Durham or Bristol or Glasgow or LSE?

I need reassurance.

Go elsewhere. Yes, you have made a poor choice if that's your attitude.

Well...what kind of lifestyle do you like exactly? As you may know there are no clubs in St Andrews, so it could possibly turn out to be a disastrous decision for you to come here, personally I'm not into clubbing but I love to socialise and St Andrews being the great social place that it is has been ideal for me, however there isn't always enough party action!

So you're coming to University because...? Oh I see, to help overpopulate universities even more and thus give those that are here to learn an even rougher deal.

Some of happen to live in the real world and need to get a job to actually survive. Most at Uni are here because they need a degree to get a job in a specific field of work they enjoy and/or pays well.

Perhaps you should consider what a university is. Yes, it's a place to socialise but only alongside the fact that it is an instsitute of learning.

So why not consider not fudging up the system, hmmm?

you definately should have gone to LSE. i believe thats one of the top 5 colleges/unis in the UK and stands well above st andrews in the economics feild. but getting a place in there is the biggest challenge because they tend to be an international college with an international focus of competition

There's maybe about 5 others. But you're probably in the minority, not just of Americans, but of all newcomers to the uni. Sadly.

Yeah Highway is right. St Andrews is right for me because it's good in the field I'm studying. But to choose it to study economics over LSE isbonkers, especially considering you said you weren't interested in the studying, just the night life. St Andrews over London?

Im american and I came and visited. I loved it. Also, contrary to popular opinion (both here and abroad)Americans decide to attend st andrews for a variety of reasons...if you catch my drift...we dont all suck :)

I didn't have enough money to come for a visit, so I made friends coming over do my dirty work for me! (Kidding--but I did have a couple of friends who want to go to St. Andrews scope out my area while they were at it for themselves)

Anyway, I've done a bunch of "research"--or at least, I've been lurking here for more than six months--and checking out as much stuff as I could find about the uni. Certainly, this illustrious group has sealed my wish to do my postgrad work at St. A's. (Well done, sinners)

I'm American, and I did a ridiculous amount of research on every teeny tiny minute detail of the British education system. I did even more homework on the unis to which I applied. With a decision as important as what uni you go to, it's just in one's own best interest to study up on a place! Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to keep my sanity through the whole process if I hadn't learned so much about about the unis before hand.

It's worth it to do the early work so you are happy in the end with the result. Hasn't it been fun to lurk, Miss Maryland?! And yes, cheers to Oli. Way to go!

I just got my notice that St. Andrews has received my app for fall of '04, and has sent it on to my prospective department. Fingers are crossed....Checkbook is out....is there anything else I need?!
