Residence computer rooms

Postby Nickel on Wed Sep 24, 2003 11:56 am

What kind of computers would people like to see in residence computer rooms.

And if anyone has any opinions about if instant messenger should be allowed there, post them here.

Thanks.

Working ones, preferably made after 1990, and computers that you don't have to assemble yourself before you use them. Also, putting the mouse balls in and having all the keys on the keyboard intact and in semi-working order would be nice.

The AMH computer room is really rather depressing.

Sadly I voted windows. It is for a public access computer room, and has to cater for user of all levels of computer literacy. Windows may not be that great but it is easy to use.

The best thing would be a mix of mac os x and windows. As this is what most people who don't know much about computers know how to use. if you gave them linux you would just confuse them.

Windows, Windows, all the way.

People don't want to spend half a hour learning Linux, they dont even want to spend 10 minutes learning Mac OS X.

Plus which, you can pick up a cheap PC and a cheap license of NT4 or Win 2000 (ITS might even have NT4 licenses going spare you can have for free) far cheaper than a Mac. But not Windows 95, 98 or ME - you need the security.

Mossop- the Gatty one is worse. I've used both.

it doesnt really matter as long as it works and it doesnt take 10mins to load 1 email (not exageratting either). i found linux fairly easy to use even though never used it before apart from the mouse not working that is.

Hi, ennairam, or Marianne backwards. That's right, as long as the computers are in fairly decent working order (about, say, the level of my own computer) then it doesn't matter about the details. Windows, Linux... even apple Macs would be acceptable :X

I used the gatty ones this week, and the PCs aren't bad. DRH had only old Macs so to me Gatty's is great :D Following this logic, AMH must be amazing...

Give them 3 weeks to be virus-riddled and pr0n-filled. Then they won't be so good...

If we are talking new computers then the obvious choice is Windows XP ('cos its cheap - thats its only advantage) but it should have a 75/25 mix of XP to OSX (which despite someones comment earlier is easy to use, i picked it up in about 30 secs, plus it means there will be a few computers that won't be virus riddled or crash every 5 mins...) I respect those Linux die hards out there, but it looks unlikely (as few people have a clue how to use it!)

Ok XP doesn't crash every 5 mins but you get my point.

If we are talking second hand then then anything that works (ie not a system 7 power mac from 1993 driven by steam or windows 98 that DOES crash every 5 mins)
