Dean's Court Mystery?

Postby fight club on Mon Oct 20, 2003 6:12 pm

Where is Dean's Court?

Talked to some people who said they lived in Dean's Court and they were dressed up like famous people, they said they were part of the oldest society in St. Andrews.

Any ideas about the costumes, and "oldest society" though?

No! It is quite clearly the debating Society!

isn't it just the oldest debating society, rather than the oldest society?

Even then, we're on shaky ground.

I believe the St. Mary's Society is the oldest in St. Andrews, and possibly Britain. Don't know who the costumed Dean's Court freaks were, though.

They were dressed up like cowboys, china men and famous golfers. I think there was even one dressed as a great poet.

They said that the "oldest society" had something to do with the Cathedral, but would not elaborate.

The Celtic Society claim to be the oldest (and continuously run) university student society.

Indeed they do. And, as I understand it, entirely spuriously.

the simplest explanation is possibly the correct explanation or something like that. could it not just be that they were trying out their costumes for halloween? or is that too simple?

I have been shamed.

Postby Laura on Tue Oct 21, 2003 3:38 pm

I am very confused now, and stand corrected- it does, however, surprise me that St. Andrews has societies founded before the 1790's that have survived (debating being the acception, which is why I assumed it was the oldest.)
I wonder if the Dean's Courter "dressed as a great poet" could have been a case of mistaken identity- it may have just been the real life great poet who actually lives in Dean's Court. God knows about the others, though.

I believe that the St. Mary's Theological Society dates back to the middle of the sixteenth century.

Of course it could be a concerted plan by Dean's Court to get the people talking about them. Perhaps they resent being the Hall no-one knows anything about and are playing a trick on this witness?

I doubt that the Dean's Court folks are all that bothered what anyone else thinks! Thankyou for setting me straight Mr. Wilson, I am very ignorant on matters of St Andrews history so should'nt have jumped into the conversation at all really!
However, does anyone know if these Dean's Court residents were headed in the direction of the Theological society in fancy dress? That may be undermining the traditional foundations of the organisation to some degree.

10th or 11th Century

Postby fight club on Wed Oct 22, 2003 12:48 am

I actually found out that Dean's Court is apparently the oldest living quarters in St. Andrews... Additionally, the dining hall dates back to the 10th or 11th century, give or take a few years.
