New Sinner

Postby Admin on Wed Oct 22, 2003 1:11 pm

As you may be aware, the Sinner is undergoing a few changes to its style and appearance.

The first step in the changes is the new colour scheme.

You can find the new look Sinner here: http://www.thesinner.co.uk/new

Question, oh Oli. What the hell is the background? It looks like something out of Alien.

Also, an animated stick would be nice.

Hmmm.

The background is just a collection of shapes. Alien? Really?

I considered adding animation to the site, then realised that it would look awful.

I don't see any shapes in the background, just plain color.

Looks nice though.

Browsers that can't handle backgrounds will simply see the "cappuccino" colour scheme.

Though adding animation would amuse me, especially if it looks like he's wanking the stick.

Sorry. Will go away now

Erm. Normally when people do kind of thing to revamp a site, I like to be as positive as possible because I realise that someone has spent an awful lot of time and effort trying to improve things, and it is unhelpful of me to tear it down. That said, the colour scheme is more than a little reminiscent of vomit. Worse still, the little devil has been replaced. This is enough of a disgrace in itself, but it has been replaced by an image depicting a hand tightly grip around a wooden shaft. What is more, the angle at which the arm is protruding gives the slight impression of movement. Now I am not sure how clearly I have to spell out what I am building to, so in the interests of public decency I shall say only this: I fear that keeping this icon may well add fuel to the fire of the argument of The Sinner's detractors who have a tendency to assert vocally that Sinners have a predeliction for onanism at every opportunity they are given. Other than these 2 things, and some newer looking buttons, little seems to have changed. So why change it at all?

Apologies if this pisses anyone off, but I have been at work all day, and I am feeling a little less than charitable.

Oh yeah, and where has the flame icon gone?!?!?!?! Was it removed 'cos Oli was afraid of how much it would get used when everyone saw the new layout?

I really like the new look - it looks a lot more professional, and is a lot easier on the eye than the old (existing) site.

The buttons at the top are easier to use than the text links (and look a lot nicer).

The stick looks a bit more like a branch, but if you think it's phallic, then I think you've got major issues that need to be addressed.

As far as appearance, I think it looks fine. An animated stick would be neat. Perhaps a stick bashing someone over the head could be made into an icon to replace the flame icon that seems to be sorely missed by some?

Functionally, I liked being able to see who had started the thread without actually opening it up i.e., the name is listed along with when the thread was last updated and how many replies it has. That said, I suppose the sun will manage to creep up into the sky tomorrow if this feature is not made available on NewSin.

But yet you do anyway. You're right. It's NOT very helpful.

Worse still, the little devil has been replaced. This is enough of a disgrace in itself, but it has been replaced by an image depicting a hand tightly grip around a wooden shaft.

The crab/devil thing has been moved to the chatroom.

I'm sure Freud would have something to say about that.

Other than these 2 things, and some newer looking buttons, little seems to have changed. So why change it at all?

Maps, Chatroom, Search. ALL NEW FEATURES.
And as I stated at the start of this thread, this is merely the first stage of the changes.

Apologies if this pisses anyone off, but I have been at work all day, and I am feeling a little less than charitable.

In that case, please think before you write a reply in future.

Oh yeah, and where has the flame icon gone?!?!?!?! Was it removed 'cos Oli was afraid of how much it would get used when everyone saw the new layout?

The flame icon is too wide for the new design. If someone would like to design a new flame icon to replace it (15 pixels wide) I will be happy to replace it.

Stick w..?!!?!

It's a sad little world that we live in, when people make such a bad thing about a logo like that.

In the world of journalism it's considered poor taste for a writer to direct replies/attacks within their columns against published readers letters that dissent with their articles. Ultimately they take the view that they're putting an opinion forward that invites further opinions, good or bad, and that's the end of it.

In a parallel above you asked for opinions on the new sinner's development, you got them, and they weren't unreasoned rants. Perhaps this response could be described as overreaction?

since its still in development, why else advertise its existence, other to find out if the changes are generally approved or not?

Other than the comment about the stick, I didn't spot any other comments that suggested how to improve the new site.

What the hell? Only nice comments are allowed, that seems to me to be more than a little dumb.

You own this website sure, but the people here are the ones that use them. Never should someone be told off for giving criticism, without criticism you may think that everyone likes the site when in fact they do not. Most admins on other sites are more than happy to listen to the people that benefit from their services - aftre all it is for them that the site is run.

As for what I think, if I am allowed to speak my opinion, I think exactly the same as before - the colour scheme is too specialised and as a result many people will not like it.

On the front page the text is a colour who's name I don't know. Puce? However, this is only a few shades darker than the background, and doesn't contrast, as it should for easy legibility. While the site at present might not look particularly pretty, it is both usable and legible. Any text that is designed for extended reading should be a direct contrast with the background, which I'm afraid the new design doesn't offer.

But it looks like you've done lots of work on the background, which looks good, well done.

How is the interface implemented? Are you using css? If so, would it be possible to have a user defined style sheet for logged in users?
