The Saint

Postby SiouxieSioux on Sun Oct 26, 2003 6:56 pm

Is it just me or are some of the articles in this so-called 'news'paper poorly written. Lets take an example-The film reviews. As a film fan I was appalled last year to read some of the reviews. Not only were the facts wrong i.e Stephen King directed The Shining but they were entirely subjective and badly researched. 'At Last Jack Nicholson is playing someone his own age'??? This was in reference to About Schmidt and not only was it a stupid headline but a total lie. The same goes for some of the theatre reviews-badly researched. Has the standard gotten any better or does it remain the same? What do you think?

Because people would criticise her for writing for a publication that's below her level.

Oh come on, thats a really stupid thing to say. How can you come to the conclusion that I think The Saint is below my level? Can I not even make a criticism? Am I to just let things wash over me and then ignore them? I get flamed for speaking my mind? I think its unfair of you to make such a comment.

Have you read the Espresso column? Two issues it's survived so far. It's got to be the worst written column I've ever read. I can't believe a university student wrote it, especially one who apparently wants to be a journalist.

The guy has not heard of grammar or punctuation, and the ideas expressed are muddled and incoherrent. He even manages to contradict himself in the space of a few sentances. I think some of the blame rests on the editor/sub-editor who surely isn't doing any proof reading.

I don't want to be unkind to the guy who wrote it but I think it has to be said as it shows the general standards and quality of the saint at the moment.

I've been so appalled by the slap-dash approach (if any) the Saint have to proof-reading that I called them up to offer my services as proofreader. That espresso will be the first thing to meet my steely gaze. I've never read such utter tripe. No - scratch that. It was so badly written that I couldn't even read it at all.

When I first bought The Saint I truely thought it was a comical account of the weeks activities. I would be first person to tell you I can't spell, but this paper takes it to extreme. Maybe they are all thrill seekers and constantly trying to "take it to the edge with mistakes man!"

It's also student newspaper of the year 2003. That is because it is actually a pretty good read, anyone tried that? I know here on the Sinner there is an obsession with punctuation and grammer, and I also noticed some mistakes in the Saint, but em, people turn to the letters page - oh look! They are advertising for a proof reader! I read the most recent issue and thought it was quite funny myself. Yeah so that espresso column is unreadable (I tried to read it last issue and well, never again) and Halo! is completely overboard, but that's the point. Oh and by the way if any of you think you could do better, there is a Saint meeting today at 1pm in the Saint office. Maybe you might even want to do some proof reading for them, seeing as how you all love correcting grammer and spelling!

Its not just the grammer though. Its the reviews themselves that are poor. If you sent one of the so-called movie reviews to a proper critic they would laugh in your face. When you are reviewing a movie its imperative that the references are correct and it isn't in any way subjective. Would you write an English essay based on generalisations and mis-quotes?

Saint is rubbish. I send them articles. They never reply and then they thieve my ideas.
Editorial is required reading: by turns defensive, gushing, self-congratulatory sans pareil whilst simultaneously devoid of irony, wit or insight. It is rank bad writing of a rare distillation.
The Sunday League Review is also awful. The reported results are never correct. Furthermore given that more students are involved in said competition than any other it surely deserves more than a third of page? As for ST2...
The Saint continues to win awards largely on the basis of its layout (which is excellent). Pretty but vacuous; I suppose in that respect it is not an unfair reflection of the greater part of St Andrews' student body. Perhaps, sadly, we get what we deserve... (Excluding you of course, my dear fellow Sinners)

I agree with the points made re: diabolical film reviews and the sporadic grammatical errors, but come on, give The Saint a break. Amongst the journalistic chaff there are many glimpses of wit and verbal dexterity; for instance, the Toffs in Need article and the one about our, um, like, inarticulacy. Also Sir Clement's contribution is much appreciated (I love that guy ;-p)
You cannot expect a student newspaper to be utterly flawless. Get a grip and appreciate The saint for what it is.
