Exam result details

Does anyone know when exam results are usually published? Are breakdowns of actual marks provided, or just a pass/fail scheme? Resits in August?

Sometime in september. Prob around the start of time or after we've allready started.
Only get a grade.
Resits usually in first couple weeks of september -but they'll tell more when the results are out.

This semesters exam results will come out over the next two weeks before the start of the new semester (before 9th Feb).

As for breakdown of marks, it depends on your department. Everyone will get a semester mark on the 20 point scale entered on to their Student Record card (http://portal.st-andrews.ac.uk/students.shtml ). I think a pass tends to be 5 or above, though again that depends on the department?

Some departments will give breakdowns of marks for exams. Medical Science students for example tend to get most exam marks entered onto WebCT so you know how well you need to do next semester to pass overall.

Resits are now going to be in the first or second week of september, before everyone returns to Uni (8th-11th Sept unless your medsci which are earlier, 30th Aug - 2nd Sept).

Normally for degree exams you will just get a grade (ie on the twenty point scale, a "5" representing a pass). These grades are entered on the Student Record Card online. You may also be able to get individual breakdown of marks from your departments, but these are not normally published formally. Most students will have sat degree exams in January.

However, if you have sat a class exam in January then you will get a mark for the exam, rather than a grade, and this will not be published on the Student Record Card, but will be available through the department or on WebCT. This would only be applicable if you are sitting modules which last for the whole year, rather than modules which last for one semester - for example some medical science modules are year modules rather than semester modules, and in this case the January exams are class exams. If this is the case for you, you will receive a grade in June which will represent the marks that you have gained over the whole year - ie the January class exam mark and the May degree exam mark combined.

Resits are in September. If you are a medical student, resits are from Monday 30th August - Thursday 2nd September, and if you are not a medic, resits are Wednesday 8th September - Saturday 11th September 2004.

If you want more information about your exam performance, just go and see the course co-ordinator.

As of this set of exams, you can now request to be given copies of your exam scripts for an admin charge of £10 (http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/registry/ac ... 20students), and under data protection law, you can ask for any details pertaining to your exam performance other than your script, again subject to a £10 admin charge.

However, in practice what this should mean is that as of this year, staff members are more readily willing to sit down with students and go over exam performance informally, since it will mean additional rigamarole for them as well to have to go through the formal procedures. It also means they should take greater care in marking, since the student now has a right to look at their paper.
