Nationality

Postby mackie on Tue Mar 09, 2004 5:50 pm

Hi All

I was talking to one of my English friends today and we got onto the subject of nationality. I always refer to myself as Scottish whereas they called themselves British. I just wondered what other people call themselves. If your from Wales do you call yourselves Welsh or British? Same for the N.Irish, Scottish and English...

Born in England, parents born in Scotland, one grandfather born in Lithuania, but I'm British. That, of course, doesn't preclude both Scottish and English sentiment.

I've always called myself Scottish and i always will! I was born in Scotland and have lived here all my life, so i think that makes me Scottish not British!

When I fill in forms I put British, because that is my nationality. Likewise if it asks for place of birth I put United Kingdom.

I am 1/2 Welsh, 1/2 English. I consider myself British because I not one or the other. Many people in England do use English/British as interchangable though

It depends on who's asking. On forms, I'm British, in person I'm Welsh.

Lived all my life in England except for time studying here, one Scottish grandfather, the rest of my family are from Derbyshire like Tintin's (by the way, Tintin, which part? Mine are from Buxton.) Live now in Hereford which is about as close as you can get to Wales without actually living there, so frequently get asked if I'm Welsh. For the purpose of Forms, I say British.

I'm half Scottish, quarter English, quarter Welsh, but I class myself as Scottish, since I'm mostly Scottish, I was born in Scotland, and I have lived in Scotland all my life.

I'm part english, part irish and part welsh, with family in all three areas. I've lived all my life in england and go to uni in scotland. So I definately call myself British. But in the end, all it really means is that you live on one of the British Isles, so we're all British (btw technically anyone in the Republic of Ireland is British too)

I was born in England, but my mum is Irish and my dad is a mix of scots and Welsh..therefore I'm British. Going by genes everybody is in these Islands. I suppose it depends on which country you identify with.

Also born and raised in Scotland, but still British. Beacause that IS my nationality. Though, I would still say I was from Scotland, or that I was Scottish. There's no reason on earth why you can't, and shouldn't, be both.
