Best dinner party guests

Postby Scully on Sun Mar 21, 2004 8:27 pm

I just wondered who people would invite to a dinner party to make it interesting and who would sit next to who? Margaret Thatcher, Billy Connelly, Robbie Williams, Hitler, Oscar Wilde, Shakespeare....?

Juvenal, Homer, Sappho, William Dunbar, Robert Henryson, Emmeline Pankhurst. Hopefully they wouldn't mind me eating birdseed.

A friend and I spent most of Saturday afternoon debating this exact question (sad, I know). My final 6 were - Iris Murdoch, Jesus, Martin Luther King, Albert Camus, Tolstoy and Bob Dylan.

In no particular order:
Nelson Mandela
Fidel Castro (he could supply the after dinner cigars)
Primo Levi
George Orwell
Vincent Van Gogh (preferably in a more lucid moment)
Bill Hicks

I'm surprised this idea hasn't been turned into a kind of upmarket BBC4 version of "I'm a celebrity..." already ;)

It has... "Guess who's coming to dinner", hosted by Anne Robinson. Hardly upmarket, but exactly the same format. Quite liked it, actually.
