Daysleeper by R.E.M. - the saddest song i've heard, then half a world away from their Out of Time Album

for years i couldn't listen to Good Riddance by Gren Day without welling up because i knew it as the song from ER that they played when the Anspaugh boy died.

Good call, although I'd maybe go for The Giant of Illinois myself.

SlipKnot- Wait and Bleed

The reason it breaks my heart is that there are people out there who can produce such shite, and still get global recognition.

whilst i respect Cash a lot, Nin's version of Hurt was far better and pretty heartbreaking, as was Something I Can Never Have.

also...

Pearl Jam - Black
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (forgotten who did the original)
Pearl Jam - Light Years
etc etc...

and...

counting crows - colorblind
3 doors down - here without you
the crimea - girl just died (maybe)

Nickel Creek "When You Come Back Down"

"Playboy Mommy" by Tori Amos is really sad, particularly if you know the story behind it.

[hr]If I gave a shit, you'd be the first person I'd give it to.

ahh...i'm an incredibly emotional person and therefore can find A LOT of songs heartbreaking. i can even find TV adverts heartbreaking. just about ALL films make me cry...so a few of the notable tearjerkers, for me anyway and some for purely sentimental reasons, are:

extreme: more than words
eric clapton: tears in heaven
mazzy star: fade into you
dave matthews: cry freeedom
U2: one
U2: all i want is you
sade: by your side
Pearl Jam:: black
david gray: this year's love
aimee mann: deathly
fiona apple: never is a promise
massive attack: protection
dave matthews: love of my life
beth orton: don't need a reason
beth orton: i wish i never saw the sunshine
there's more beth orton, but i broke my 'central reservation' cd...sad in and of itself (that i broke it).

i'm sure there's way more but that's all i can think of for now.

Pearl Jam - Black is quite heartbreaking. Especially the line about being a star in somebody else's sky. Very sad.
